What is this???? Any ideas would be helpful.

Hi All,

Found this the other day with my digging buddy, mdholedigger. The site, we believe, was a encampment.
We have found many things there. This decorative metal piece is definately old, the metal is pitted and the gold color is GOLD for sure. Wish I could get better photos. It is 1 1/2" x 1/2" . I am thinking it could be a civil war era piece since many things were found in the same general area - i.e., bullets, buttons, etc..
Please let me know what you think. Thanks, Ma Diggins.

I guess the base metal is iron? It looks to be iron. Don't recall ever seeing a gold plate over iron. Usually it's brass. As for the item, don't recognize what it goes to. Interesting find however. David @ Dixie

Hi,

I put the size in my post - 1 1/2 x 1/2 "

I was wondering, too, if it were something a woman would have in her hair or a brooch.
Thanks for your reply.
