What is the difference between Excalibur II & Minelab Excalibur 1000

Is the Excalibur II better than the Excalibur 1000? There seems to be more repairs on the Excalibur II.
What are their differences?

The Excal II is the newest version of the Excal and it had some changes over the model it replaced which was the Excal 1000(10" coil version) and Excal 800(8" coil version). Now its just the Excal II and you pick one coil or the other when you buy.

Changes are the Excal II now has a nimh battery pack versus the nicad pack on the model before, it has the newer tornado coils which are slimmer and lighter than the older versions, headphones went from blue to yellow, some color change on the pod from blue to the new neon green, and the Excal II has improved or increased shielding.

Does the newer model really break down as much, need more repairs? Only minelab could really tell you that. You cant base that on the limited people that visit these forums, this is just a small percentage of those who metal detect.

some break down for some, most do not.

if u do not have one yet, look around on the classifieds..........see if u can find older model...........with the sword...............the best model ever

if it were to break down, it is fixable for 99% of things, but the control board can not be replaced............the new boards..........excalII will not fit in the tube.
god they were hot, i have kicked myself in the ass many many times for selling the one i had back in 2006...........the excalII's................are ok

just my opinion........................opinions are like..............well u know

good luck

i have an excal 2 1000 and ive done very very well with mine...im just missing the beaches this summer..maybe in the fall ill hit some beaches again..
but imoa you cant go wrong with either older or newer machines.....

The Excalibur II has metal shielding in side the case to cut down on out side interference and better stabilize unit. You can actually set the threshold inside with electrical interference not affecting it, at half sensitivity. It take practice!
If you remember back in the 1990's Compass did the same to the Pro series detectors. These units are a hard to beat on depth and trash area's. They still go for about half of the original sales price today when the can be found. I have 2 and I just love them.

I seen lots of Excal ll circuit boards never seen any shielding on them, who knows minelab might have forgot to install the shielding on the boards I seen
What minelab calls shielding is just that laughable green foiled un grounded decal, LMAO

Ya I was quoting Clive Clynick from his book, he wrote that he called Minelab and ask what's the difference between the new II and the older excalibur and that was his answer. He did say he opted for the Excal II instead of the older model????

I have to agree... whichever one is working at that time..

Never heard of any shielding either..

The Older Excal's were best..

The second best would be the ones that didn't have to go in for service...

I say that because.... The tones that you grew accustomed too, will no longer be the same..

I went through 3 Boards on mine and each time it came back.. the sounds were different.

I have 3 Excals Blue, Yellow and Excal 2 and the tones are different on all 3-if it don't go bubblbubblebubbblblb ..........DIG IT!!!!

I totally agree with mtpockets - after having a headphone shorting problem last year (within 2 months of receiving my Excal 2) and after getting it back from service - the tones were totally different from the unit that I had purchased...and I really don't like them at all now. The real sweet gold tones and crisp high tones are no longer as distinctive as they originally were.

I TOTALLY AGREE with Barry concerning the Tone Difference!! I have (2) of the OLDER SWORD Excals', and I know I had them serviced from time to time,
and my TONES are not as SWEET as my Bought NEW Excal-800 BBS (Blue Headphone Unit). I think they must have CHANGED COMPONENTS over
the years!! I really MISS those SWEET TONES!! HH, Les
