What is the difference between a CZ-6A and a CZ-3D?

[size=medium]I have a CZ-6A but have thought about upgrading because of its age. It works well, I enjoy using it, but it is getting some age on it. I noticed Fisher still makes a detector that looks exactly like the 6A but calls it a 3D. The controls look identical and reviewing the owner

6A is weather resistant and the 3D is not....Meter parameters are set up different on the 3D to dig more to find more in real old places..Tom Dankowski has an excellent article so Google his name as he gives a good explanation of his ideas and the workings of the unit...Personally would keep the CZ6A as many feel its the best of all CZ models used and properly tuned all CZ's give the same approx.depth...

I've had a CZ-6 for 18 years and it is my backup detector of choice. Now I mostly use it with the 10.5" coil at the beach for extra coverage and because it is weather resistant. I also use a CZ-3D and have found that while it may be slightly hotter I can run the CZ-6 at a higher sensitivity and faster sweep speed than the 3-D without falsing. The knobs on the 3-D are slightly smaller in diameter w/ a smaller wing tab. That makes it a little more difficult to "thumb" the controls but not impossible. Dan-Pa is right about all CZ's with approximate depth. It has more to do with the tuning of each machine and it is hard to say whether a new or used 3-D will perform better than your 6A without testing. Also my CZ-6 doesn't have the external speaker and I believe yours doesn't either. The 3D's of course do. As for performance I do not know where you 6A falls. Tell us about some "typical" depths that you are getting with your 6A on coins.

I have found tough to get a CZ3D above 5 sens. while having a stable unit whiles an older CZ6A-6-5 etc..one can sometimes get the sens. up to 6-7-8 while still having a stable unit..In any case ground conditions permitting a CZ3D will go as deep as other aforementioned CZ with higher sens. settings and of course operator ability also comes into play as surely a finer ground balanced CZ usually will go deeper than one not balanced properly...
