What is the correct way to Noise Cancel?

I have read different opinions concerning noise canceling. Some say on the ground while others say in the air. I know the Manuel says on the ground. However, I have read that Minelab admits making a mistake and the correct way is in the air. Any comments appreciated.

Hi Mitch........... I have heard the same thing as you have. I normally set my coil on the ground and hit noise cancel and it seems to work fine that way. Haven't tried the other method where you hold your detector parallel with the ground about waist high and hit noise cancel. I might give that a try the next time I go out......:) HH.

Hi Mitch,

I have tried noise cancelling both ways and found there to be little difference, however I did contact Minelab and they assured me that the correct way to noise cancell is on the ground as per the book.
If you have any questions, minelab are very good in answering their Emails.

Hope this helps....Regards....Boony

Lately I've been trying both methods of noise cancelling. Sometimes it makes a big difference (raising the coil) sometimes not. Perhaps it has to do with what's under the coil at the time.

I have never seen a definate awnser to that question. Some say turn down the sens. low and then do it and some never mention turning it down first...I would like a pro from minelab to step up to the plate and tell us the correct way to do it. I ordered a Catalog from minelab and it came with a cd on the new X-Terra 30 and 50 and the guy deminstrating it show to put it on the ground(check for anything under ground first) clean ground...and hold very still and push noise cancil and wait till its done...and to always do it from time to time if you are moving around alot...diff. ground can be only a few hundred yards away...or if you experience a lot of false chatter.
