What is the best White's for finding old coins?

I posted a question on the best detector no matter the cost. Now i want to know every ones oppinion on the best White's detector for my need. I live in Missouri and want a detector that will find old coins in clear or cluttered areas and will go deep preferably. I also want it to be able to find gold rings and jewelry if that's possible. i have a old cheap detector now and want to upgrade to one that i can use for years to come. I know there will be tons of different answers but am hoping to get a good idea.

I have heard good and bad things about the Fisher F70 and F75. I have heard they are good but somewhat cheap made. i am wondering what people with these machines think of the quality and performance of them. Thanks for every ones help, Mike

Howdy Mike

You can't go wrong with an IDX PRO, it is an out of production White's model that was dropped in the lineup about 1995. The good news is these come up for sale every so often at a good price. They are a well ballanced Two filter, slow sweep speed machine with a LCD meter, and you can get it upgraded with a Mr.Bills modification that lets you manually adjust threshold volume and ground ballance the machine to your ground and coil sellection. I've had mine for over a year and I must say I am most impressed with it's performance, and I prefer it to my past experience with a XLT (6 years) and a DFX (6 years). It has a very accurate flash phase lcd meter but no depth meter, but after using it for awhile you will be able to tell depth by sound and raising you coil slowly as you sweep over the target and see what height you can get above the target before the sound drops out. Hope this helps..................Hombre

I have used many detectors over my 35 years of detecting and for a Whites detector i like the MXT better then any of the Whites. It goes deep and you will need a smaller coil for the real trashy areas and find the little 4X6 mini shooter works excellent. I find it is a fun detector to use and easy to adjust and understand it.
On the F-75 and the F-70 of Fishers I have one of each of them and the F-75 is a very nice detector and seen where it will really do well and I dont find they are cheaplie made in my opinion. I am going to sell the F-70 as it is not as nice as the F-75 which I find works very good for me in some spots I detect. My main detector is the E-Trac and the Sovereign GT while my wife uses and does great with the MXT.

I am going on almost two year's with my F 75, over 2500 hours, and have not experienced the first problem of any kind with it. My F 75 will go deeper then any of the White's being used in the club I belong to. Depth, however, isn't the most important aspect for selecting a detector, IMHO. I personally want one that will stand up, light enough to hunt all day with without your arm going numb, and will hunt well in trash envirements. The F 75 has all that, plus you also get the added bonus of great depth. HH jim tn

Mike your asking the same question, what is the best White's to find old coins. You probably have an old park in mind. Most old parks 99.9 percent have been searched to the point where only the deep layer of targets are left. Will a clad or medium depth detector reach these very deep targets? No. If you are looking for the old coins the metal detector used has to both see and give you identification of what the target is at that deep depth.Example last summer I hunted a 1849 race track.Five experienced hunters covering the same area rechecking each ones targets.Garrett 1350,Garrett Scorpion,Whites DFX,Fisher CZ70,and my Sovereign GT.The Sovereign got a faint good target tone with a 180 on the ID meter none of these other units could see this target or ID it as a good target. After digging down about 11 inches the other hunters were surprised when I retrieved a 1890 Liberty Seated dime. The MXT is a great unit is it the best for old coins or would I use it for that purpose no.By the way the hunter that uses the CZ70 is a Whites dealer and can use any White's in his inventory he chooses the CZ for hunting coins. If you are going after deep coins a very good pin pointer is a must.

I feel this question is somewhat mis-stated. The word "old" doesn't apply much, in my opinion, to the machine, but should be directed to WHERE is the best spot(s) to find old coins. Any good machine will do the job on coins without preference to the age of the coin. As to the best White's - there are a number of models that are very capable and they all have their followers, I'm sure each owner thinks their model is among or the best so if you can, you should try to get the opportunity to try several to see how they work for you.

Bill, any machine will find old coins near the surface.Let's redirect the question where are the old coins? They are still in the old park that was thought to be cleaned out by the hunter who used the latest TR detectors in the seventies and loaded up on silver coins minted in the 40s 50s and 60s.Better VLF units found deeper harder to reach coins minted in the 20s in the same park. There are some detectors that are ahead of the curve on depth and masking problems that will find the deeper older coins. There is a drawl back with some of these deep detectors they usually require a much slower coil sweep and you just won't cover the area of a clad unit. The larger more efficient coils are even producing deeper coins.Again where are those old coins? They are 10-12 inches down and you are walking over that 1853 quarter.

i have several place to go that i think i should find some old coins. i have a bounty hunter land star detector now. i cant seem to get it to work right anymore. when i first got it i found coins all around my house but it seems to not work that well anymore. i am upgrading and i want a good detector and i have read awesome things about whites and there customer service. i have a few realy old place to go. one being an old town that has been gone for well over a 100 years. and another is a place where they made tobacco clay pipes over 150 years ago. i want to be able to get down there deep to get them old relics. my bounty hunter doesn't do well in either place. the pipe factory to my knowledge has never been hunted. the old town has but over 25 or 30 years ago so i think there should still be alot of relics there. i have 1 other place that my father-in-law has access to and that's an old civil war ground. I'm not sure but i dont think its been hunted much either. they have found alot of musket balls and some cannon balls there when they use to farm it. anyways thanks for all the feedback, Mike

Mike, the metered Whites are excellent units and will do well for you.
My choice in their models would be the M6 with it's many great
features.
But, have you considered a non-metered machine offering quality sound
on targets? My suggestion for you there would be none other than one
of the TESOROS. Choice for best coin finds at good depths IMO, is their
4-tone ID GOLDEN. Choice for relics & best Depth, with the "H.O.T."
technology is of course, the TEJON and it's dual discrimination controls.
Next, it's very efficient cousin, the VAQUERO, also with H.O.T. tech circuit.
Both HOT units have manual ground balance controls that work in Disc. mode too.
You can hunt all day with these MicroMax units at only 2.4 lbs. Many coil choices also.
Tesoro units have a Lifetime Warranty and are highly respected and efficient for
finding all that you mentioned. Good Luck though in whatever you choose!

I can not use tha heavy machines.

They hurt my sholder so bad I can't hunt!!!!

I hate that. Have to take it easy for days

waiting for tha inflamation ta go down????

Tha Tejon goes deep and it goes deep on

small and lower conductive targets.

Tha F75 is supposed to be very well balanced

as well as being light. About tha same weight

as tha Tejon, and it's supposed ta be deep

also.

I prefer to stay lighter than the Tejon or F75.

I only use Tesoro uMaxes. Range from 2 pounds

to 2.4 pounds. It gets heavier if I use a big coil.

Any way. Nothing against Whites.

I would love to try out tha NXT, but I've had lighter

machines than that put me in tha house for a

while.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
