What is the best/quickest way to clean the coins you find?

Nevada Silver

New member
Just curious as to the best and quickest way to clean the coins that we dig from the ground? I realize that we do not want to alter the older more valuable coins by cleaning -- but I am referring to all of the current clad coins we dig up.

Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions and help!

A rock tumbler works well for me, just keep your pennies separate from the silver colored clad.

Thank you, Larry! I do have a rock tumbler but I have included the pennies with the silver clad -- good advice to separate them to keep the silver from having a copper tint!

The quickest way is from the hole straight into the mouth. Don't taste so good though.

Larry what cleaning agent do you use.if any ??? I do know as you say separate cleaning works best. And even separate rocks for each is better....I have found..I need advice on cleaning solution though...

I use sand as the medium and a drop or two of dishwashing detergent, a cup (or less) of vinegar and add water to just cover the coins.. I don't fill the barrel over 2/3 full.

........met a guy that tumbled about 200 Large Cents and proudly showed them to me.....a professional numismatist.

I "think" it scarred my soul (but know it chapped my.........)
