What is the best handheld pinpointer out there, in your opinion

Hello there, I am posting a general question. How many of you use hand held pinpointers when you detect? What are some pros and cons of the models you use? Do some only work on certain detectors and what are the price ranges of them, etc? This is just a survey since I am looking into buying one. I use a Fisher CZ-7 and a Minelab Sovereign XS-2a Pro, plus an old Tesoro Golden Sabre, if that helps at all to narrow down brands etc. I mostly hunt for coins, jewelry etc.

thanks for your responses in advance,

Mark

If you are looking for a general pin pointer that you can use with any machine ... I would suggest the Garrett Pro-Pointer. It can easily pick up a coin at three inches plus it has provides both sound and vibration. You don't need to remove your head phones to hear it. There are cheaper pin-pointers on the market but it's worth spending the few extra bucks.

I have only ever had one pin-pointer, so I have no way of making a comparison. I have a Garrett Pro-Pointer and am very happy with it. I agree with Dancin' Dave's comments, and would add that it does get more "excited" as it moves closer to the target and thus pinpoints it even more accurately. Some pin pointers I looked at were wired into the detector. I didn't like that idea as it seemed too restrictive. I use a different detector for gold detecting and a non-wired pin pointer seemed therefore to be a better option for me.

you might find it financially restrictive to get a Sun Ray pin pointer for each detector. The sun ray probes are detector specific. It is actually a 1" coil built for your detector that works both in Discrimination mode and all metal pin point. It is attached to the detector and pretty much stays there. Thus, you would need to get one for each. At about $185 a pop... OUCH. Maybe not the best resolution for your situation.

If one of your detectors is your primary hunting detector that you always use unless it isn't working, I would consider a Sun Ray Probe for it, and something like the Garrett for use with the others. It that isn't in your budget right now, do get a probe, they are indispensable. It sounds like the garrett is a good start. I have a vibraprobe for use with my backup detectors.

I also use the Sun Ray pin pointers. have 2 of them on 2 separate machines. After using a bulls eye II and one of those automax kellyco pin pointers, there is no comparison..... to me, to hear the tone in the headphones while looking in the hole with the pin pointer is without question priceless!

I have to agree, the Sunray is where its at. I found a used one in almost new condition for 100$. I used the Centech before that and its ok, better than nothing, but I would get the Garret over it.

the pro-pointer is amazing - my only gripe is it can be too sensitive and i wish i could dial it back or have it adjustable. it sings up to 5 inches from most metal - even smaller coins. i wouldn't hunt without it now though

Glad to hear you are enjoying it backlashd! The Sun Ray probes are slick as can be. Once you've used one, it is difficult to hunt without it.
