i have used minelab, garrett, whites, compass, tesoro and a few other brands over the years all with target ID. i always found that my coin count went down when i depended on the ID instead of one of my non ID detectors. i want to get back to the basics again with a good non ID detector, what is the best coin detector that has good depth without the target ID on the market now ??
I thought i was posting this in the regular metal detecting forum but i see that i put it on the whites forum. can someone move it to the other forum thanks fodman
One should never depend on the TID, it is just a tool to help you. If you rely on the TID, put a piece of tape over it and you have a beep and dig detector.
Just set your TID machines you have on one tone, just disc out small iron and cover up your display and you have a "beep dig" machine. Just because you have target ID doesn't mean you have to look at it. I would rather have TID available to me than not to have it at all.
There is absolutly NO good answer to that question. Different soils in different areas make some detectors a bit better than others. Different prices gain you different depths SOMETIMES. Knowing your detector and taking risks at iffy targets is your best weapon. I dig my share of trash. BUT I get rewarded with the good stuff. AND, I find an incredible amount of good stuff after I remove the trash. No machine will give you just coins and you wouldn't want it to. Gold is worth a lot more than most coins. So you dig 100 pull tabs to get a gold ring. Been there done that. Worth every dig. Even 100 coins most the time won't give you the return a gold ring will put in your pocket.
So relax, play with your machine. You have 2 other good solutions above this post and you can try them. Welcome and come back and post your finds. If you understood how many VARIABLES are around to rate each and every machine you would understand. Here are a few.
Soil minerilazation, soil moisture, depth of coin, size of coin, orientation of coin, other objects around coin, metal coin is made of, settings on detector, ability of user.
To make a SOLID, NON BIASED comparison of detectors, ALL kinds of different soils have to be available, coins of different metals and of different depths and orientations (tilted, on edge etc) need to be planted. they need to be detceted on different days, (wet, dry, etc), different iron masks, multiple coins, and multiple other metals need to be around at different depths also, and every detector needs to go over each and every coin and the results caculated. LOL IMPOSSIBLE.
So comparison tests are NOT allowed and nobody can tell you the right detector for your area. So not trying to be rude, BUT practice and have a high end machine and just enjoy the hobby
You may want to look at the vaquero. I wish I had one. This is just my opinion, I have been down your road...using many detectors with vid. Now I beep and dig.
To the best of my knowledge, Tesoro is the only manufacturer offering much choice in beep and dig detectors currently. Depending on your budget, I'd recommend the Vaquero or if your budget is tight, the Silver
I would have to agree that the Vaquero is one of the best all around beep and dig detectors made for coin hunting. Read the reviews on it from other users and it gets almost perfect scores everytime. That's hard to argue with...............
What we all like may not suit you at all.. I'm certainly not trying to be a wise guy either..
Consider this as research, and draw your own conclusions...
This may be beat to death already, but the best beep and dig detector is the one you choose to go with and it's the one that you work at to use to it's fullest capabilities. Even the switch and go Compadre in the hands of a learned treasure hunter will excel under the right conditions. Most of those who come to these forums take the time to learn and study their machines and as you see, they gather here to pick each others' brains and experience.
Unfortunately, it does take time to get the most out of what you buy just like getting a new rifle or bow and thinking you can run out and bag your limit the day after opening it up under the tree. Half of the enjoyment of this hobby is getting to know what you can do (and what your limitations may be). So whatever you buy, learn it and come here for advice. Then you'll get the most out of it.
The best know landmark beep and dig is probably (in the used market) the fisher 1266x!
In the new market I would say the Fishers 1270,
the best warranty in the new market would be a Tesoro.
What about the minelab musketeer advantage? This is a deep machine that has an extremely quick recovery speed. It's slightly heavier than some machines but you can belt mount the control box for long days in the field.
Excellent choices.
In a Nautilus you are getting very arguably the world's best relic detector.
Many serious Civil War hunters employ no other.
However the Nautilus is heavy. The Vaquero is not.
The Vaquero is a great all around detector.
The Nautilus is a bit one dimensional.
