What is the Advantage in Running in Iron Mask??

I just got my new Explorer last Wednesday and had a chance to take it out this morning. I pulled up 3 Mercs and 10 wheaties so I considered it a good day. I was hunting with a Disc. pattern that I created myself for coins and it seemed to work fine.
I've noticed that a lot of Explorer users run in Iron Mask and I'm not certain what the advantage is if you're mostly after coins.
Please help...:)
Thanks,
Tim

Iron mask set from -8 to -16 gives you a good chance of hearing/seeing some good targets that are near trash - typically iron.
Have you ever noticed that while swinging you get a quick beep and then a null (discrimination) sound? That could be a coin. If you loosen up on the discrimination, you will be far more likely to hear the good sound. From there, you can isolate the target and attempt to discern what it potentially could be.
I would suggest running some air tests. Put a dime and a washer in your hands and pass them both under the coil at different distances from one another. Try it with discrimination on and then at iron mask ranging from -8 to -16 with your sounds set to ferrous.
It will be an eye opening experiment. When I did it, I was stunned because I realized how many potentially good targets I had missed.

Thanks for the info Tim. Some of us post very little but read a lot to pick up info.

Thanks Tim,
I thought that that was the answer although I think it will take me a while before I'm able to get used to the tones of this machine. When I ran in iron mask -10 I got a headache from all the tones but I see your point. Ohhhh...I'm infatuated with this detector!!!
Thanks for the info,
Tim

No problem, my pleasure!
I am merely passing along the same information that I got right here a few months ago. Credits go to Jim upstate NY, whom I presume is Jim Yates, one of the forum moderators.
