What is it?

Found this a while back and still haven't been able to determine what it is. The metal is folded over in the back as if it holds some type of card. Plus there is a small notch that would also indicate a card should be placed in it. It has the following info stamped on the front:

Laurence Elton Whiting
No. 53694...
YR 1912
Height 5' 11"
State of Connecticut

Any ideas?

Burial tag???

Burial Tag? You mean there could be a body under it? I was thinking driverse license holder or something...

once thought I dug a gold type coin was a burial tag, needless to say I put it back.
I really am not sure what your find is?

This looks like your guy....... Could be a death tag or a military tag of some sort since it has a holding section

Sort by Name Ancestry - Whiting

WHITING, LAURENCE E was born 04 June 1912; received Social Security number 196-26-8825, which corresponds to Pennsylvania; and died 27 January 1995.

Would be neat to find his relatives but not if I dug up his burial tag... I found some dog tags during the summer and returned them to a vet who had lost them 10 years ago in a lake.

That would be a bit awkward if it was a burial tag. But I am still not convinced that it a burial. Why would a burial tag have the person's height listed on it?
SC had metal driver's license way back when. My neighbor still has his from the 1940s. But, I still haven't found pic of Conn license yet.
They must exist since I found the following question on Ask.com. Of course, the 1885 date is a bit before Mr Whiting was born.

"How much is a 1885 antique Connecticut drivers license worth?
It is metal, and engraved in the metal is 1885 Connecticut and the gentleman's name. Assuming this is legitimate, how much should one expect to pay for an item like this? Thanks!"

I think it could be a drivers license or something. For a burial I don't think they would have a place for a paper card on the back.

May have put you on wrong track. After reconsidering have concluded some form of license is more likely to have height on it. We used to tag our burials with metal tags temporarily until the headstones were placed. Height would not be on such a tag. Most vaults are standard nowadays. Your not likely to encounter a burial tag except in the trash / discards of an old cemetary.

My apologies.

Nice to see all those SSAN's that can be used for fake Greencards and other nefarious things. Wonder what the SS administration does when a deceased SSAN starts paying into the system again....

I am SURE if you sent the SS any money they would gladly accept and hope you keep paying them, even if it was coming from a dead guy.....Sorry SOB's. lol

No problem at all, at least now I'll keep an eye out for burial tags because I hadn't even thought of it before. I can't believe they list all the SSN's like that either lol.
