[size=medium]I found this unidentified brass item today in the area of a civil war skirmish on private property with permission. In the area I also found a fired 3 ringer, pistol bullet, fragments, and several flat buttons. I thought it might be worn on a belt to hold a bayonet or some other gear?. Also I thought it could be some type of horse tackle? I included the men

Few years back I found something similar and thought it was a sword holder but later research by me showed that this was wrong. I am enclosing a picture of a harness part called a gag swivel. Here are several examples. Looks like that might be what you have.

I dunno, I'm thinking a sword hanger of some sort. Configuraton looks a little differnt than horse tack IMO.

Took me a little while to find this old harness catalog but this drawing looks a little more like what was found.
