I found this item with my MXT and the 15X12 sef coil at 8 inches. It is a stone material that gave a 83 VDI reading. The length is 4.5 inches and 3/4 inch wide. Both sides are beveled in the middle. The edges have a 1/4 inch flat edge tapering down to a sharp edge looking somewhat like a chisel. What is it?

Man that's really interesting, it look like it has a rusty out side layer.

It looks like a core drilling, which could contain any amounts of metal content, copper, zinc etc. Years ago it was probably the same size from top to bottom, but has erroded to what you see. JMHO Dennis in Idaho

The more I look at it, I bet Dennis is right. An old core drilling would look like that.

It is native Indian digging / punching tool! I saw things like this when I was at the archeological practice in Belgorod Dnestrovsky/ Carolina Bugaz-Gol.
Congrats!

Your MD paid for itself with excess.

Where did you find it? Be careful, it is hystoric object!!!
See PM.

You may be right Micro and I am probably wrong saying it may be a core drilling but I have seen core drilling with lead and zinc that corrode and look similar to the photo but I am alittle sceptical as most native Indian digging tools that I seen or read about were made of flint/obsidian or bone. Titan Man indicated a 83 VDI reading so it has a metal content. So what do you think it is made of? Like you said it may be an Indian digging/punching tool but I would like to have more information on it before I would think that it was an artifact. Also I would like to know what area it was found in and hopefully Titan Man reads this and tells us where he found it. Thanks HH Dennis in Idaho

Probably you are right too! 83 VDI!! metal!! But looks very much the same!

I found this item in my back yard. It is next door to a old Stage coach Inn. I have found other artifacts that appear to be Indian tools like a weapon for bludgeoning and the remnants of an ax like item. I am sure that there were many Indians in this area of Indiana at one time. the pictured item was pretty brown with dirt and I could not wash it all off.. The item is more rock like than metal.

I believe i have seen these before. They are native American piercing tools for leather. They are made out native copper. They are EXTREMELY RARE! You owe it to yourself to get it looked at by an archaeologist to be sure. Nice find. That would also correspond to the VDI of 83
