Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me identify this "thing lol I was out on a hill side next to a huge oak tree yesterday.... I got a broken but consistent signal.. i dug down a pulled like a 8 inch nail out of the hole... I swung the detector back over and new i had something else in the hole.... I pulled this interesting little object out of the hole,,, It said 29 "Something" and i believe Indianapolis Indiana at the top..it is about 2 1/2 inches tall with a eagle on the top!!! at the bottom right side you can see 08 next to the circle,,, Then on the left i believe i can see a 9.. So it gives me the impression that its from 1908... inside the circle at the bottom it looks to have two people shaking hands with some writing all around the edges of the circle... Then on the right and left side of the object it has a tower.. If anyone has a clue what it is,,, or what it may be,,, any information will be appreciated!!! Thanks

I don't know what it is but it's really old and cool though. It could possibly be an award of some kind because on the top it look's like there is a small ring for a chain to be hooked on. Look's like the other ring is missing. Just a guess. Nice find though.

Looks like some kind of G.A.R. badge /medal (Grand Army of the Republic...civil war veterans). Clean off some of the corrosion with a soft brass brush and it should make it clearer.

Thanks Guys,,, I have been soaking it in Extra Virgin olive oil and taking a soft tooth brush to it,, It was worse lol Thanks for the info knipper,, I thought it was just at first,,, i threw it in the bag and forgot about it till around 10 last night lol Take care guys!!

I think I see the date '98 on one of the points. This tells me it was probably a souvenier badge for a 'convention' or reunion of Union Vets held in some city (don't know yet) in 1898.

That is a badge or souvenir of some type. It seems to date 1908 and if you look at the oval at the right it appears that is the State Soldiers and Sailors monument. Was there a dedication when it was built or a state fair in 1908? Time to start research. Nice cool old find Derrell!

I agree that it is most likely a GAR related item - possibly a badge or hanging medal (would have been attached to a ribbon). Possibly for the 29th Indiana Volunteer Infantry regiment that saw action in at least four battles during the Civil War. This may be from an encampment (reunion). I see a date, possibly 1908 - the encampment was held in Toledo Ohio that year. Indianapolis hosted several encampments including 1893 and at least two or three later ones (they may have held the last one which was in the 1940s I think).

That's really cool.. It is definitely going to take a spot in the collection of "random digs" lol Does anyone know if it has any value???? I know it has some corrosion,,, that i am working on removing!!!! But I wonder if it has any sort of value to a collector???? Thanks every one!!!
