What is 'clad'? TY!

Clad is like a sandwich. Layers of stuff or coatings. Not totally one metal. 1964 and earlier silver was just that "silver" around 90%. Looking at the side of the coin it is a solid color. After 1964 the cheaper minted coins came out "clad" different metals sandwiched together to make what is a cheaper version of the true silver coins. Look at the side of the coins and you will see the different colors of the crap metal. Now I believe that from 1964 to 1970 the silver coins are 40% silver. Maybe that's just the halves. Someone more knowledgeable will reply about the 40% coins.

That's when you're dressed. Nah, actually it's what they call all the cheap coins that were made after silver was phased out in 1964. They are copper clad in shiny cheap base metal.

Just the halves were part silver. I remember my pockets full of real silver dollars. Wish they would bring those days back but it will never happen. When they took away our right to own real money and started making all the monopoly money they really screwed the public.

THey now print and mint money that is worth nothing, backed by nothing, and loan it out and collect interest on it. Quite a racket. THey put counterfeiters to shame. :)

Someone more knowledgeable will reply about the 40% coins.[/quote]All dimes, quarters and half dollars 1964 or before were 90% silver. From 1965 to 1970, only half dollars were 40% silver. The did make a Bi-Centennial half dollar that was silver. It has a "S" mint mark and had to be ordered from the mint. There are scores of silver commemorative coins that were made and are silver. Go to Coinflation.com to see what the silver content and silver worth of silver coins are.
