What is better to search, the beach or the surf?

I am going to start beach hunting and was wondering where people had the most luck? I have been told that where the waves break is the best place to look. Please let me know your thoughts.

If jewelry is your primary goal, hunt from the waterline to chest deep or deeper if you can. Most people lose their goodies while swimming. You will find some on the dry sand where people take off their rings while putting on the suntan lotion, sometimes forgetting to put them back on until it's too late. They will shake the sand off of their towel and away goes the jewelry. The waterline where people wade and play should also be checked. For coin hunting, the dry sand is best.

You will find at low tide there is a LANE on the wet sand about 10 feet from the water line. You will know it when you start hitting targets. Just take a look behind you after you have dug a few wholes. I have hunted the surf, but ive always had better luck in the wet sand.
