there is several very old abandoned houses in the country near me, what is the best way to find out who owns them? I would love to ask permission to hunt there. Just not sure how to find property owner?

If it is inside city limits, their code enforcement could probably tell you. It is probably public record, but you might have to pay a record search fee. If it is in the county go to the county seat and look at a platt map. Our county shows anyone owning 10 acres or more. I actually bought one for that purpose. It was 50 bucks and worth every penny. The cool thing about this map is it also lists all property owned by an individual in the back of the book. While you are asking permission about one spot you might as well ask about the other properties they own. We have a lot of ghost towns from the oil boom. You can usually find the section, township, and range (legal description) and then look it up on the map and locate these lost towns. I have done this before and then used Google Earth to find the footings and foundations from satelite photo. Here in the prarie grass you can see footings and such under the grass because the grass doesn't grow the same and is a different color. Google Earth is the most awesome search tool I have found, I just wish they had the high resolutution all over the country.

The county I lived in in Fl. all I had to do was go to the assessor's web site. Click on the property. It told me the owner's name, address, when he bought it, date of the building, size, Oh, it told me EVERYTHING. You can go to the assessor's office if it is not on line.

Ask the nearest nieghbor. They will tell you owns it, who leases it and how to get a hold of the owner. Always maintain a friendly attitude no matter what they say. Counrty nieghbors talk a lot about these things...even if they live many miles apart. They also watch out for each other too. Chances are, if someone just drove in and started searching, they would find out who the owner is under some not good conditions very quickly.

Like John said - ask the neighbors. You surprised how many neighbors are quick to tell you just to go ahead and hunt it. That's good enough for me! Never had a problem with this system.
Google Earth is the most awesome search tool I have found, I just wish they had the high resolutution all over the country.
Take a look at this one maps.live.com/ The birds eye view is better than google. If the site is to close to a military site it won't show.

Go to the local School tax office! Find out who is paying the taxes on that particular site, most likely they are the owners!...............................HH.............Joe
