Last weekend at the old Boy Scouts camp site, I came across some, I'm not sure which one, as the leaves haven't grown back yet. I'm pretty sure I got it from the roots in the swamp. My hands are killing me with itches!!!! Any home remedies would help greatly.

I am putting hydrocortozine on it, and straight bleach, but it still itches like crazy!!!!

I spent 20 years in the Marine Corps and dealt with this all the time. I use to suffer really bad, but an old rancher friend taught me a little secret. Use Dawn Dish Washing Liquid. Use it in the shower. It removes the oils that cause the inflammation. The best time to use it is the day you get exposed to it, but it will help with chronic cases.

Bleach? OMG! No wonder you are itching like crazy. A little something about bleach, I recommend one cup of bleach to one gallon of water to my clients for the treatment of thrush infections in the lateral sulcus of horses' hoofs. I can tell when they use it straight as the foot is ate up! Straight bleach will eat a horse's foot up. Imagine what it is doing to your skin!

You're not going to believe this but if you use some of the white go jo handcleaner on the places, it will dry that stuff up. You will need to rub it for several minites, don't have any water on your skin before you apply it or during the scrubbing process, then rinse it off with water. According to how bad you got it, you may need to do this several times over a couple of days but it will work. What it does is remove the oil that causes the allergic reaction. In the meantime, go to the store and get some CalaGel, it has benedryl in it, apply it and that will last for hours so you do itch. Another product called Tecnu Clean, it has mineral spirits in it will do the same thing but costs more than go jo....One thing I have learned if I think I have dug where poison ivy grows is to go to an area and rub dirt on hands real good before I go home, it will take most of the oil off. Be careful too about your digger handle as if you get it on it, you will need to get it off.

Straight bleach is not good ! The Tecnu stuff works pretty good, as do other remedies ( Dawn liquid soap) that get rid of the oil. I have found that the roots in the Spring are killer...you dont' know what they are because there are no leaves and the oil is more potent ( at least I think so !).

Anything that can calm the itch and start the drying process ( Caladryl, Benedryl, Bactine) is worth putting on.

Last thing....wash your clothes with bleach, Teacnu liquid ( I think they make stuff to wash your clothes with) or with Fels Napa laundry soap ( you know...the brown soap that smells !). You have to get that oil off your clothes as well...it can stay there, and weeks go by, you get poison ivy again, and you wonder why. Also, I have used the brown soap on my hands and it seems to work...I think it's more psychological...anything that smells that bad has to work.

Me...I always use gloves when land hunting and wash my hands lots.

Wash your detector coil and rod too !!

hey t-fiend, chiggers cause small isolated itchy bumps, extremely itchy, they look like red zits. these lil critters hang out in weeds and burrow into your skin. if that's the case my friend, put clear nail polish on the bumps. instant relief. the acetone in the nail polish attacks the burrowed chiggers, and the polish also cuts off their air supply. in a day or two, theyr'e gone, and no more itching. hh,

Ok, I will give you my poison ivy cure. This works for me and I do it. You try it at your own risk.
If you are squeamish look away now.

I take a washcloth or other rough rag and soak it in bleach. Straight Bleach. Then I take the washcloth or rag and scrub the affected area until all the bumps and blisters are open and hopefully bleeding. Let everything dry then was the area with soap and water. When the stinging burning and firey pain are gone so is the poison ivy. The burning and stinging only lasts about 10 minutes. If I let the poison ivy go or use any other method it takes a week for the itching to go away. I will gladly trade 10 minutes of pain for 7 days of itching.

Seriously this the method I use.

Also years ago there were poison ivy shots you could take to immunize you agains poison ivy. My Dad had us all take them when we were kids because we lived in the woods and fields as kids. It took a series of about 3 or 4 shots to work and when you got the shot it felt like the nurse hit you in the arm with a ball bat. Does anyone know if they are still available. They were quite effective and I didn't get poison ivy from the time I took the shots at 10 or 12 until I was in my 30's

it burns a little but put tobasco sause on the welts.it will burn for about 3 minutes but then the itch is gone
