What is a V rateing?

Old Katz

New member
I have a 5.3 and an almost brand new 12 inch coil.
Will these two coils work ok on the MXT Pro and the Spectra V?
Is there a reason why they would not?

A V rated coil is an M6/MXT/DFX/V3i coil made to newer tolerances required by the V3i. (All newer coils, since the "V" introduction, are "V" rated.) Older coils were made to less demanding tolerances ,but have no functional difference on pre and post non "V" model machines.

Most of the older coils do work with the V3i (at lower gains but w/no TX boost) and a few RARE ones work fully as a V rated coil. A smaller amount do not work well at all. (The way to tell if your coils are "V Rated" is to see if there is a V engraved on the search coil ears.)

I have had a few coils from my previous machines and they worked fine w/o TX Boost turned on (and still have a 950 that works so well I don't need the newer V Rated version.) It's a bit of a crap shoot.
