What is a "Tune-Up" from Garrett?

What do they do if you send a machine back for a tune-up, exactily? How much will Garrett charge for such a mysterious job?

Last winter it sent my Grand Master Hunter into Garrett for some repairs. It had a cracked case, a key pad that did not work all the time and a few other issues. They replaced the lower half of the case, key pad, battery box and tweaked the tuning so that the meter reads dead on for all the coin types. My detector is so old that they did not have an exact replacement so instead of showing a "pinpoint" button in the middle, it says "Fast Track". Not an issue with me. The key pad works just fine and the machine is in like new condition. They charged me about a hundred dollars and I had it back in about 10 days from the day I sent it in. Not bad for a 25 year old detector.

Just as Jerry said. I also sent my 2500 in. The ser# represented that it needed the new ground mineralization chip. I called them filled in the paperwork and they received it. They called me and advised me on possible repairs. If I wanted them. Of course if you specifically state what you want that is what you get. To make a long story short, I got the full update.

Now here is the reason. Today's market you would pay for a new 2500 around $900. Well I had the repairs complete and also ordered a new coil. So to update my machine and have it compare with the new ones cost a little over $200. Granted this also included a new 9.5" coil.

They changed the board if needed and again you advise them on what you would like to have done.

I also asked if they would install the new board what would I loose, the talk feature. Well the talk I never really used anyway. Its the route to go. Before you decide give them a call. Sue the Garrett customer service representative was very courteous and delightful to speak to.

Hope this helps with your decision. Kevin

i sent mine in last winter for a tune up and checked the coils also, which i need the standard size coil connector according to them and they did not charge me not even for return shipping.and it was not under warranty.

A tune-up, a very broad term, can also include a metal detector being sent in with it's coil(s) to be re calibrated so that the electronics are in near perfect tune with the coil. Temperature, physical abuse (not intentional), component's change due to age may put the tuning alignment out.

I have decided to send my unit in and have it checked out. Maybe the lack of use is more detrimental to an electronic equipment than hard use. That way I can go all out next year, as my health allows. I plan to send the housing and both coils. The large coil is not working, no matter how much I lower the sensitivity. I might as well get the new chip, because if I get a chance I intend to go to North Carolina and Virginia in July and I want to make sure the 2500 is okay and work on my end as far as being a knowledgeable user/owner. Doesn't look as if I will get to go overseas next year like I want to. It will be worth the shipping and the cost of having it checked out by someone I trust.

I had a broken coil wire on my 2500 that was causing havoc but didn't know what it was. I sent it in and they replaced the coil and updated the circuit board. All had to pay for was half the price of the coil. I guess their charges are arbitrary depending on the overall condition of the machine? Anyway it was well worth it. They will tell you how much it will cost if you ask them to. Onus

Duh. I just read my other post.

I also sent mine in recently for the update and tune up. I had a old 2500 with the talk feature. The ser# on the machine also let Garrett know it needed a mineralization chip. I sent it in, they called me on a Friday, told me what needed to be done. Paid for over the phone with a credit card. I also added a new 9" coil. Price for all was a little over $235. The machine now is kicking some butt. I did have to re-tune myself to it though. When the new chip was installed lost the talk feature. Not a problem for me. I love the service from Garrett. I also have a scorpion that I bought some years ago and will send it in also. Electronics is not my cup of tea. better to have someone that knows what is going on with it, then someone that doesn't. Trust Garrett for great service. Good luck. Kevin
