What is a trough

Would someone be so kind to explain exactly what a trough is,i hear it all the time i think it's a dark area in the water ( deeper part) but i am not sure.

cheers Maureen S.

Sure, you are correct. A trough is an area of the shallow shore line that has been wallowed out by wave action and it is sometimes darker. Suppose you are walking along parallel to the shore line in water about knee deep and all of a sudden you are in water waist to chest deep. That would be considered a trough. The sand is being moved out by wave action but the heavier targets are remaining. You can now hear older targets that were too deep (under the sand) to hear before.
