What is a Fatty Indian?

banditicey

New member
I keep seeing mention of a fatty Indian penny
what is it and what makes it fatty?

I suppose I could google but I believe Ill get a more honest reply from members of the forum

Thanks

The early IH cents 1859-1864 (1864 was split between old style and new) were of a different composition and thicker. If you held one of those and a newer one, the difference is easily noticable.

As a side note, it is the difference in metal composition that will make these read lower than a regular IH cent, so if you are passing up those deep 12-27 to 12-29 signals, you may pass up these "fatties" and the flying eagle cents too.

can i show you guys something? I found this fatty indian at wal-mart (in 2009) sitting on a rack holding the gum and misc. stuff near the registers. someone set this and a corroded zincoln on the metal frame of the rack to get rid of the "weird coins" in their changepurse (i presume.) i couldnt beleive it. its "fat"....like a nickel, maybe a touch more.

the ones that "know" reap the rewards!

Wrong thread Ray. you were supposed to post this in the thread where everyone posted pics of themselves:thumbup:

Yea, all my Fat Indian Head cents have been 22 to 24 on the Conductive side.

Moonshine - That 1862 is a pretty one - never see them come out of the ground looking like that!

Look up, he said he found it at a WallyWorld on a gum rack, not in the ground.......NGE

I found my first Fatty...an 1863 in A1 condition in 1976 at my sisters colonial house in Duxbury Mass. The house was built in 1690 and is still in great shape. They have over 20 acres of land and now that I have an E Trac I will be sure to take it with me on my next visit...Can you imagine...1690

Very nice herbajones and good one Dr.Bob. By the way Ray-mo, that hurts. That is a picture of my Mother in law. Where did you get that? JK my Mother in law shaves.

All in all, I haven't found one yet so I have nothing to offer other than a possible laugh,
