I found this Memorial cent yesterday and it appears to be eaten by another metal. It's got a VERY distinctive edge on it and can still make out Liberty and God (sorry it's upside down). The reverse is quite visible also but it's out of focus. Darn camera. I've NEVER come across any thing like this before. It was about 6" deep. How strange! Thanks for looking and HH to all, Nancy

Hope your not having a picnic there or sunbathing on the ground you found the coin in.still using a laptop this is a """""""""..nice find

:surrender: I give up Nancy. Was there anything else in the hole? I guess it was a zinc. I think they can rot in your pocket. Rob

Here in my area, there must be alot of natural acids in the ground.I find pennies, both copper and zinc almost totally eaten away.

No, not a fire. It's weird though. HH, Nancy

That's what Larry said also. But there wasn't anything else in the hole. It's a strange one for sure. I'll save it so you can take a look at it. The outer edge is like a copper cent and not chewed up one bit. HH, Nancy

Radioactive decay??????? OH MY! :surprised: :stars::stars: HH, Nancy

Maybe someone tried cleaning it with Tarn-X before they lost it. Looks like it's been struck by lightning.

Hi,

If it was a zinc penny, I would say that the copper foil around the penny could have been damaged allowing the zinc on the inside to be disolvesd by week acids in the ground. it you have any soil high in CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) rain water (H2O) will disolve the CaCO3 in the soil producing carbonic acid H2CO3 which could discolve the zinc on the inside. When the carbonic acid is saturated with zinc it may caused it to deposit on the outside (tail side of the coin) of the coin making it look like to diffetent piece. Zinc is a silvery gray metal.

Take a penny and sand the foil of the edges and put it in a glass of week acid for a while and the zinc should disolve out if you then heated the solution to evaporate the water in the acid solution will percipitate the zinc out on to the coper foil.

I find lots of crappy zinc pennies in the parks around here. Either the soil or fertilizers eat them up fairly quickly.

I've found many zinc cents also and they're awful deteriorated. This one is so different though. That's what I can't understand.. Thanks and HH to all, Nancy
