[quote BarnacleBill]Does his wife have a matching ring? You could get a little more ID info if she does.
For what it's worth:
1. Turn the sensitivity way down, you only want to examine the top soil. Throw some coins down after GB'ing & Noise Cancelling for some tests on how low to set it. And if you have one of the larger DD coils or the 5x10 use it, you'll get better coverage.
2. Bring some markers along, poker chips, tennis balls etc to lay out grid lines. One of the biggest issues is going to be time management. Yes check the most likely spots first, but don't wander around in circles. It can be very boring doing this, but this is one case where the tortoise wins just about every time.
And pay attention to what he said about "he thinks" he lost it in the yard, it may not be there, so don't thrash yourself over it if it isn't found. Do a good grid pattern and know you've done your best!
Good luck!

No matching ring, as that was one of the first things I asked. Good reminder on the sensitivity. I would think that almost minimum should work. I will be using the stock 9" 7.5kHz as that's all I have right now. Also good suggestion on the markers. He thinks he can retrace his steps, but then it doesn't always work out that way. I believe he was washing the dog, so that could account for the ring slipping off his finger. And yes, the ring may not be in the yard at all, so I will keep that in mind.
Thanks for the input, and I'll let eveyone know how it goes.
