What ID # does gold give you?

Was out doing some nugget shooting with my 70 (6'' DD HF) and I only have one test nugget that usually seems to give me a reading of 4. How much will the size, shape and purity of the nugget affect the reading? I hunt in prospecting mode (all metal) and when I find a target I switch to the coin/relic mode to ID the target. I havent found any nuggets yet but I have noticed that when I hunt using this method I tend to avoid digging iron. Is there a chance that I'm passing over gold? Seems to be a bunch of -8 and -6 targets out there that I hope are just iron or hot rocks.

Well I do not know about "Gold Nuggets". I do know that gold rings and jewelry will ring in all over the foil to nickle to pull tab range. I have only found 2 gold rings. One came in at 10-12-14 range. The other at a 12 solid. You just never know, Beale.

Gold rings I have found with the X T 70 have ranged from 10 to 28. I guess that nuggets, depending on size and shape and other mineral content would also cover a large range.

How do gold coins ring and ID. I don't happen to have any to practice on.

This specimen weighing 3.77 oz, gave a 6 TID on my XT/70 using a 18.75 elliptical DD. I found it in a natural drainage here in Central California, below quartz fields that been worked probably a hundred years ago. The quartz fields were exposed after a fire that caused us to evacuate our home for a week last year. I subsequently filed a mining claim on the area.

Nice nugget
Hope you find a bunch more it'll help make for that house.
