What i learned about (small) coil prices....

AndyNM

New member
Thanks to all your good replies. I got my eyes opened why some (small) coils are more expensive than others. Here is the summary:

1. Companies that have the coils made outside the US have to pay lower prices because the person in the country ( China or others ) may just get a fraction per hour labor than someone in the US.

2. Large companies that produce large quantities of coils can break even faster on the expensive machines than a small company that has to buy the machines for just a few coils.

3. The price of oil and therefor plastics effects coil prices too.

4. Research and development time can be different from coil to coil. Time is money.

5. How the coil is marketed. The manufacturer, the distributor and the dealer all make some bucks.

6.Quality of the product and warranty backup.

Thanks to all that posted a reply or called me to discuss the subject. I learned a lot and that is what i like about forums like this one.

Let me apologize to all who felt offended by my post about coil prices.

everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have my 6" HF Xterra coil on order for $156 shipped, I gotta have it. Good hunting. John

As moderator of the X-Terra forum, I appreciate your coming back and explaining your thoughts. In defense of some of the less favorable "comments" you may have received, keep in mind that this is a forum specifically for the Minelab X-Terra. As such, some of us may get a bit defensive when a person who no longer owns an X-Terra comes on and states a negative opinion on an accessory coil they have never seen, and accuses the company who makes them (and helps sponsor this forum) of charging the price just because they are being greedy. I am, however, glad you came back and "continued" the discussion. One additional comment I would like to share on small coils would be that the X-Terra is new technology. It didn't have the luxury of using coils that were originally designed for a different detector. e.g. White's DFX shares coils with the MXT and M6. The XLPro shares coils with the 5900, 6000, IDX series, QXT series, Classic III and the XLT series. The Explorer shares coils with the Quattro. The Sovereign coil is the same coil as the Excalibur. The Tesoro Tejon shares coils with the Vaquero, Super Lobo and Cibola. The Tesoro uMax detectors all share coils. The Fisher 1200 series all share coils. The Fisher CZ series all share coils. The First Texas F4 shares coils with some of the Bounty Hunter detectors. Smart engineering? Maybe. But, sooner or later, when the product design takes a giant leap forward (as VFLEX has allowed), or those models are discontinued (the XLT is the only 6.592 kHz Whites currently manufactured) those coils will not work on the new units. IF and when that happens, I have to think the price of those new small coils will change. Simply a matter of R&D dollars and production quantities.

On more of a personal note, did you notice that you were not banned for posting your "views" on another site? I mention that because that happened to me recently while discussing the X-Terra small coil on another site. After I was supposedly banned, the "Mayor" of that site made posts saying "the resident Minelab salesman was listening to crickets". He said that I wasn't a Field Tester for various Minelab products. He said that I sent threatening emails to the site sponsor after I was "banned" from posting. And he said that when they contacted Minelab, Minelab didn't know who I was. Unfortunately, the Mayor seems to forget that we all have access to the Minelab website. There he would find some of the Field Test Reports I've written on various products I've tested over the past few years. He could also find several articles that I have written as "user guides" for specific Minelab detectors. (For the record, a couple years ago, the Mayor emailed me and asked if they could post my "Musky Hunting Made Easy" article on the website for a Company he use to work with. I gave him permission.) I am not telling you this to brag. But if he thinks for a minute that anyone who has visited the Minelab website hasn't at least stumbled into something I have written, he is only fooling himself.
I am not employed by Minelab. I do test some of their products. I also test products for other manufacturers. I have granted Minelab permission to post my reviews and articles on their website. I also gave them permission to use my testimonial and personal information in their brochure. They have. I did not contact his forum sponsor and I did not ask to be allowed "back on" their site. Frankly, if a person has a general understanding of computer technology, you don't need permission to access their site. And, for the record, I am not listening to the crickets.

In closing, the people who read this forum, and those who post here, share a common interest in learning more about the Minelab X-Terra. If you decide to buy another one, and want to share your thoughts about it, feel free to come back and post. As I said, I don't ban people for having a difference of opinion. I reserve the right to edit posts that are derogatory toward forum sponsors and other members. But if you make a sincere effort to contribute in a positive manner, your posts will be well received. Thanks. HH Randy

I can tell you from reading the other site that the person you speak of is a quack. Some of his posts make me question his senility.

Digger Speaks the truth..as you all know I got aggravated and loud mouthed on this forum.Did he ban me"No Sir" Did he make me realize how darn foolish I really sounded to most everyone. "You Bet" Did I deserve it.."Yes I did"..and more importantly..He tried to help us resolve the problems. He made me realize with his posts that I was just upset and not being reasonable in my posts, and way out of line.He did not threaten me about being banned, He did not remove my posts. He just very gentlemanly explained what is, and what is not, expected to be a member of this forum. He reminded me what this forum is all about.Sharing information.Sometimes in the course of publishing for all too read you
will upset someone else.........thats to be expected, in general, not everyone agrees with you always...We have a moderator who is fair and
understands that point. He quietly gets things back on track of the business of sharing information.Thank you Digger. I for one appreciate all your efforts.....and we know your not bragging.I have read much of your published information and learned a great deal from it.

1. you wrote: .......who no longer owns an X-Terra.

How do you know ? In part you're right, because right now i just have an X-Terra 70 in germany at my moms house, so i do own one. The only thing i didn't like about the 70 was that a small coil was not available, so i sold my US X-Terra 70. I had plans to buy a 70 again when a small coil is available and i may go ahead and do that.

2. you wrote.....did you notice that you were not banned for posting your "views" on another site ?

Well ....i got banned on another forum here on Findmall, but was let back on later.

3. I don't know what you and "the Mayor" have going on and i don't know what that has to do with my posts. "The Mayor" even posted a reply, that he does NOT share my thoughts on the coil prices.
Because the Mayor and I post on the same other forum doesn't mean i agree with everything he does or posts. I bet he doesn't agree with everything i post either, but we get along just fine.

4. The forum rules here didn't say that i have to own an X-Terra to post here. I didn't state a negative opinion on an accessory coil i have never seen, i had an opinion about a coil price i saw. I didn't question the quality of the coil in any way.

I hope you get the differences with "The Mayor" staighten out so you won't see a "Mayor shadow" anymore behind any poster that posts on the other forum too.
