Gold panning is the newest hobby for Star and myself. Several years ago I won a White's gold pan at a club hunt. Last summer we decided to go down to a nearby creek and give it a try. Our first time out we found a lot of magnetic black sand and one tiny flake of gold. Seeing that tiny piece of gold sparkle in the bottom of the pan was a big thrill and now we're hooked. You won't get rich or even pay for your gas from panning in Illinois but there is a certain satisfaction that comes from seeing that shiny speck laying in the pan. Not only is it extremely relaxing but gold wasn't the only thing brought down from Canada by the glaciers. There is also the slight possibility of finding diamonds, rubies, sapphires, garnets, and zircons. Another plus to walking these creeks is that you can also find interesting rocks, fossils, and the occasional Indian artifact. I'm so hooked that I'm planning on getting a 30 inch sluice this spring. Between metal detecting and gold panning its going to be an interesting summer.

That looks very nice Louie......:clapping:

That's beautiful Louie! You've got some talent there. I bet she's proud to use it too. I would hate to put that first slice on it.

That's is one exciting hobby. I would love to pan for gold even if it's just going through the motions. I remember the black magnetic sand that you guys brought in to show.......how cool!!!!!!
