I am new to forum and only been detecting a few years. I just purchased a x-terra 50 about six months ago, I love it.The only thing is I don't know what kind of headphones to use. I bought some calrad 8 ohms and sold them the next week. They barely had any sound. I really want some with coil wire.Any and all opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on where you live you might consider the, "Rattler" earphone. I Like it because it only has one earphone and let's me hear what's going on around me.

I live and hunt mostly in rural areas in kentucky. I really want two ear pieces.:help:

I have the RAT headphones and the Sun Ray Pro Golds. Both very good sets. I like the RATs a bit better. The coil does not kink, and I prefer the sounds. Check with our sponsors I am sure they can hook you up, Beale.

I have heard alot about the rats, but they are really pricey. I do not want to spend over a hundred. Preferably 50-90 range cheap ones would be ok if they sound good. Used ones are ok to if anybody has any. Thanks I still will check in to the rat phones.

Radio Shack sells a decent pair with adjustable volume for each ear at a reasonable price, they work well for me.

There are several manufacturers making excellent headphones for the detectorist. Personally, I have a huge melon. Cap size = 7 3/4. As such, I find many of the current models (although they work well and sound good) are too small for a comfortable day detecting. My choice is the Gray Ghost Originals. Large frame, stereo/mono switch, 90 degree plug, ample length cord, volume controls, excellent sound reproduction and nicely padded ear cups that block out most of the outside noise. JMHO HH Randy

sunray pro gold. I also use rat phones on my xlt. The rats do have the larger tanker type cup and are a bit more comfortable but I like the sound with the sunrays on the xterra.

What about the koss ur 30, I might get a pair of those? Any suggestions pros or nos?:help:

I have a pair of koss ur 30's that came with my GP 3000. No complaints and they are super comfortable BUT they have no volume controls on the headset if that is what you want.

This is a post I wrote on another Forum:

I am not saying that Gray Ghost headphones are the very best available but I am using them for an example to show you a point. As the Ultimate Gray Ghost phones have a Limiter ON/OFF switch. Others have theirs permanently ON or permanently OFF.

The Limiter ON is mainly used for coin hunting to stop loud ear blasts and the permanently Limiter OFF models from Gray Ghost are dedicated prospecting phones for nuggets.

(Permanent Limiter OFF)
Nugget BustersTM
Nugget Busters were designed to the specifications of demanding professional electronic prospectors and gold nugget hunters. They are similar to the Original Gray Ghost but without any limiter for wide-open sound. If you're just getting started in gold hunting, we're sure you'll never want to use anything but Nugget Busters.

Personally, I think the sound reproduction on the low tones (using the Koss UR-30) is the best I've ever heard. And, they are large enough to fit my huge melon. However, as David mentioned, they do not have volume controls. They may have changed them since I last bought a pair, but my last ones didn't have a 90 degree plug either With the side mount headphone jack of the X-Terra, you're taking a greater risk of bumping the plug. One other thing.......they lack the stereo/mono switch to allowing me to use them on some of my "non-Minelab" detectors. (Actually, it should be described as Tip/Ring Series vs Tip/Ring parallel, not stereo/mono) For those wondering why I would have any "non-MInelab" detectors......... just to remind me how good the Minelabs are! :smoke: HH Randy

Thanks I will probably go with the koss.Do they have a good warranty and do they stand behind it?
