Hi Jbird,
I haven't seen the schematic on some of the detectors you mentioned so what I am
going to say may only apply to a few.
If you look at the SS schematic, you will basically see 2 channels that look about the
same. On some models of Tesoros, there are 3 channels. One for the all metal mode,
and 2 for the disc mode.
Two are shifted by the ground balance, the am mode is, and one channel in the disc
pair is. Thus, when you ground balance the detector, you do adjust the disc circuitry.
You might want to try this little experiment. First ground balance the detector and then
bury a typical coin such as a dime and see the maximum depth of detection.
Now, place the detector in the disc mode and adjust the ground balance control CCW
while bobbing the coil up and down just above the ground until the detector starts
howling at you as you raise and lower the coil. Then back the gb control back cw until
the noise quits. What you will probably experience is when you switch back to the am
mode, and lower the coil, the detector will go quiet as the coil approaches the ground.
With the detector adjusted this way, try your depth capabilities again. Some people
have experienced as much a couple inches more depth using this technique. In most
cases, it is more like an inch or so.
Another trick that has been around for a while is to crank up the threshold. This makes
the am mode unusuable, but will also add to the depth capabilities of the disc mode.
If you try these little tricks, let me know how they work out.
