What happened to Quality?

snoop & scoop

New member
I bought a 6.5 x 9", and a sniper coil cover for my Ace 250. I had to sand the edges of both before I could put them on. The 6.5 x 9" broke around the inside edges the 1st time I tried to remove it and put it back on. I have used a number of different brands of detectors, and have never seen such chinsey plastic used before! The dealer I bought them from replaced them with the old style covers for me. I told him I would pay, because it was'nt his fault Garrett was putting out such a poor quality product. Why would they do this, when they make such great deterctors?

i have two covers for my ace 250 and ive not had any issues with them...im getting ready to order an ATPRO so im hoping itll be the same?

I have the coil covers on both the 6.5x9 and the 9x12 they were difficult to put on I tried to take them of to clean but I am afraid I will break them
I guess if they didn't fit tight they would fall of

It's not the fit. They have to be snug. The plastic they used to make the ones I have is less than the thickness of a business card. Any pressure on the edges, and they bend and chunks break off!

I would have to agree on the plastic being very thin..I looked at mine to hard and it cracked:lmfao:..I have taken mine off several times to clean in between the coil/cover and I worry about it breaking every time..I'm just real careful with it.I think it could be a little thicker..

All my Garrett coil covers had a tight fit. I am glad they did, as there have been runs on some other metal detectors in the past where they were just a tad oversize, and some people had to use caulking to permanently mount them. To get the Garrett coil covers to fit, all you had to do was put the coil in cold water to shrink it,and put the coil cover in hot water to expand and soften it a bit. They match up nicely, and maintain a nice fit where the coil cover remains on the coil. To remove the coil cover periodically to get the dirt out, set the coil in hot water and slowly and carefully remove it. Garrett has always had great coil covers. I have used coil covers on the 8" Crossfire, the 8" Crossfire II, both the black and white stock imaging coils and the stalk coil for the ACE 250. No problems at all.

I haven't had any trouble with my coil covers, they are kind of hard to get off and on but that is to be expected. If the coil covers were loose they would fall off. John had a good idea with the hot and cold water deal,I bet that works great..............HH, Bill in NC

Why even bother with coil covers? Just spray on some truck bed liner and forget about it.:wiggle: $8 a can at walmart(which would probably cover everybody's search coils on here). If/when it starts to ware off just spray on another coat. Happy Hunting!:)

Sorry for no text in that last post. I once read that a blunt edged piece of wood is best to help push the cover off the coil. I use a piece of oak trim about 2 inches wide and about 10 inches long that works well. I shaped the end of the wood to to follow the arch of the coil cover so there is more contact of the hard wood with curved surface of the coil cover. More area of contact makes it less likely to split the cover.

Got my ATP today...with a coil cover...........it fits nice and snug and seems to be the same quality as what ive had on my minelab.....you must have gotten a lemon

I have found the covers made of an inflexible plastic that will crack easily. I put a shot of air from my compressor into the crack where it fits and it will usually blow off without damage. Prying on them will crack them for sure. I like the truck bed liner idea. Onus
