What gain setting?

Hi Folks

Just wondering what gain setting your all using, I've been trying to find a setting I'm happy with but just can't nail it, I've tended to settle on 26 but just wondered if I'm missing something. So what setting are you using and why did you choose it.

Cheers

Volume Gain of 14 works good for me but that is something that will vary greatly from user to user. Your hearing, background noise and the amount of modulation you desire are all personal factors

i really like a gain setting of 15. really makes 7-9 inch targets stand out with moderate trash i think as far as deeper signals go. gain of 20 makes targets seem like its closer to the surface.

Myself and 3 others that I hunt with run Gain up to 30. That made the deeper coins scream at depths to 12 inches

Hi, quite a difference with people's preference. I must admit I've not tried a lower setting than 18 but I'll give it a try, I've been running at 30 the last few days but prefer a slight tonal difference between deep and shallow. It will be interesting to see if there's a pattern with any other users.

for me if there is moderate surface trash say 1-5 inches or so a lower gain will help you ignore those shallow targets and only focus on the deep ones. but only if youve been pulling up deep coins from the depths.

I run mine at the top levels,,,, I want to hear ALL coins loud and clear,,,, I will look at the depth meter if I need to know how deep it is,,,,,, for me I have found old coins deep and near the surface so making a tonal difference in the machine is a mute point for me

I run mine at 24. I used to run it at 30 but turned it down to 24 just because I've been hitting sites with a lot of surface trash lately.

I agree with what Grouser said. Funny thing is, most of my old coins have come from shallower depths than much of my modern clad. I know this is coincidence but I pulled an 1867 Nickel a couple of weeks ago that came from about an inch deep, in a park where I was digging modern pennies and dimes at about 5-8 inches deep all day, go figure.

To answer your question, gain is a personal preference settings. I don't think you will hit/miss anything by messing with this setting. I would set it where you personally like the sound of it to be. For me 25 seems to work just fine.

Okay guys, I know these might be silly question, but I need to know the answer. What does the gain do? If I set it at 20, what do I miss? If I set it at 30, what do I hit? Or, do I have it backwards? Higher gain lower depth? HELP!!!

Volume Gain from the manual:

Range: 1 to 30
Factory Preset: 24
Volume Gain controls the amplification of a target

Thanks Larry. Makes sense. What is that silence that I hear, or don't hear, when I'm passing over a target?

The silence is when you go over a target which you have discriminated out (a target in the blue area of your screen). The silence is referred to as a "null" of your threshold. The threshold is the buzzing sound that you hear while hunting.

When you go over a target, it will either respond with a tone (when the targets ferrous and conductive values fall within the white regions of your screen) or it will respond with a null, meaning the target falls into the discriminated area of your screen.

Hope this helps -Marc

The silence is called nulling. You are passing over a target that you have rejected with discrimination.

I have mine at 16, so when I hear a signal that sounds good & it is quieter, I know it is a deeper & possibly an older coin. I had mine at the factory level of 24 initially, but every signal sounded similar & I did not know how deep the signals were without referencing the screen every time. If you want to dig every signal, then the gain setting should be kept high so every signal sounds the same. Since I dig by sound and glance at the screen when I am confirming to dig a signal, I know by the volume of the signal approximately how deep it is. I may pass over shallow pennies just to find those deepies. At times I will dig all those shallow signals just to get some keepers, but I am really comfortable with the sound variation at a level 16.

Ok, less confused now. Thank you guys. Where is the "Like" botton on here?
