What does notch up the "gain" mean...

It means to increase the sensitivity.

David

Basically refers to increasing the sensitivity of the receiver circuits of the detector. Nothing actually to do with the ground balance or discrimination.

Ralph

Yeah basically boosting the detecting frequency. I wish they would make some of the machines with multiple frequencies that one could just flip to, like from 7 KHz to 15 KHz or higher. Would make a very versatile detector.

It's called the Minelab Eureka Gold. Operates at a user selectable 6.4, 20, or 60 kHz without having to change the coil. Other Minelab models that also have this feature were the 17000, 18000, and the Golden Hawk. They also had full-range discrimination rather than just being dedicated AM gold units. The Eureka also has two-speed auto-tracking or fixed GB. The DFX will also operate independently at either 3 or 15 kHz, or both at the same time.

Thanks Ralph but I was thinking along the lines of detectors in general and in my price range, and something that won't give me a hernia to pack around. ;)
