What does it mean when gold is marked 925.........:shrug:

Not long ago I found an ear ring. Unfortunately said I had found gold in the title of my post.:O

Well, I received all kinds of flack and opinions about it because the hallmark said 925.

Everyone kept saying it was gold plated silver and I did not know what I was talking about.

No one wanted to believe it was gold. I did not care. It just made a good sounding title.

I got a used gold tester. I've checked it out and it gives accurate readings.

What do you think the gold content of this ear ring is???????????

I cut this ear ring half through to insure that it was reading the inside and not

just the surface. And I've checked twice. This ear ring is 14k gold.

My guess would be it's a euro thing, or something like the Au that says 417....

I saw something about it the other day, but can't recall the exact site, so can't quote it directly.

Try a drop of sulfuric acid. If it bubbles, it's not gold.

If you do it as a fractional, like with silver, the .925 indicates 22.2 karat gold.
BUt your meter reads 14K?
I would suspect it is a spurious foreign designation of some kind. Not every producer adheres to the standards of marking that we accept.
Really, anything goes and I dont believe there are any bodies that strictly regulate these things.

I have been hunting since 1981 and find anywhere from 25 to 75 pieces of gold a year, including many earrings. Quite frequently you will find a ring or earring marked 925 and gold colored. I have never known of any of those being anything but gold plate over silver and the amount of gold is about the same as any other EGP or GP marking on 14K, not enough gold to count as gold. It is possible that the earring shank is gold with the setting being held in sterling as many of the stems are gold. I have found many so called diamond earrings (studs) some actually in 14K, but have never found real diamonds but many look darned good. If it is gold colored in all probability a little scraping will reveal the silver under the plate. If there is such a thing as 925 gold Ive never heard of it and if so, guess Ill need to check a lot of my silver.

I tested it with a tester that I have used about 50 times to day alone.

It is working well.

It can detect gold plate.

I did not test the stim.

I cut half way into the body of the ear ring to expose it.

That made sure that I was exposing anything that would be under the plating if it existed.

I did it more than once because every one has assured me that it is silver.

Well, their all wrong.

The ear ring is 14k gold. You can take that to the bank.
