What does it mean to run silent with the Excal?

I have read a couple of posts where it was suggested to run the threshold so low you could not hear the hum. Why do this, other than the obvious reason which would be to get rid of the constant hum in
your ear. The manual says to set the threshold so you can just barely hear the hum, so what have you guys discovered?
Thanks for all responses and if this horse has already been beaten to death then let me know the approximate date and I will do the research on this forum.

Enjoy the day,
Planchkr

It is less distracting when you hit iron and the detector nulls.

Most of the time there is alot of beach to cover and the targets sound off better and like I said, less distracting.

I am sure there are other reasons, but that is why I turn it down.
