What does DEEP actually do???

On my etrac I really don't like the fast setting due to the audio distortion it seems to give targets. I am trying to learn to use my ears more and more so fast kinda makes that more difficult.

On deep however all I can read is that it just boosts the audio of deep targets. I cant really tell by air testing. Can anyone confirm that it makes the machine go deeper or just boost deep signals so they can be heard easier? If so, cant just upping the gain accomplish the same thing? I have mine set on 20 and seem to like that. I also read from the manual that deep can slightly slow down reaction time. So again wouldn't just boosting the gain be a better option?

I am going out today to see if I can find a deep good target and experiment. Any info or insight from your would be greatly appreciated!

i am intrested in the same thing, have been trying to figure this one out .looking forward to an experienced user info

If you look at 1 of my posts about silver I mention it. I hunted about 5 hours yesterday and tried it in every situation I could think of. I bet I turned it off and on 75 times Clean ground, trashy ground, low gain, high gain, deep signals, shallow signals, on a VERY deep on edge barber dime and none of them could I tell a difference. I think upping your gain to 20ish is the best bet.

The barber dime I dug was a very good find for me considering how deep it was and on edge. I KNOW if it were not for the Minelab:clap: it would have not been dug. NO way would a cheap detector find it. It was a very broken and rough signal. I just had a hunch and decided no matter how deep it was I was gonna see what it was. DEEP did not help a bit on it.

I am going out again today and will experiment more but as for now I am not sure it helps me.

i went and tried some stuff yesterday and i didnt see any difference with deep on,the only thing is when i run deep on and fast off the signals sound a little better but i am worried that i am going to miss stuff because i hunt a lot of trashy parks and old home sites.i will keep playin with it and reading posts, good luck to us all

The Explorer II manual does not say a lot about the DEEP function (page 86), but I generally hunt the in DEEP mode with FAST off because FAST tends to make the audio "choppy".

WHAT GAIN DOES
Figure 5.16 (on page 54) explains how the GAIN function works.
* The vertical axis represents the loudness of the audio response to a target. The horizontal axis shows the depth of the target (weakness of the signal strength).
* Select any given target depth and you can see how the loudness increases for a given GAIN setting.

WHAT DEEP DOES
With DEEP on the gain curve is reshaped so that the gain curve is not a straight line but has a "bow" to it. For deeper targets the gain (loudness) is increased. For shallower target the gain (loudness) is reduced and therefore about the same as if DEEP were off.

Hope this helps,
Glenn
