What do you think?

Let me preface my question with the statement I do not have a CTX

You might not be missing anything or you might be missing everything. When you get your CTX, try using the different modes, Discrimination patterns and Tone ID choices, you will find the ones that work best for YOU in your ground. Using someone elses or factory settings is a good way to get started but what works best for someone else might not be YOUR best choice.

What Larry said. With your experience on the E-Trac I don't think you will have any problems. So many options with the CTX you can customize what works for YOU. HH :minelab:

I concur that the best way is to use it my experience with the E-Trac taught me that. From what I have read about the CTX I thought the setup I proposed seem to be close to what I am using on the E-Trac. I have a modified Conductive mode that I am happy with and several different patterns that I use with it depending on where and how I am hunting. I use a TTF set up that has worked well in heavy iron and I know the Combined function will be able to be setup in a more flexible setup than what I am using now in TTF. I was wondering about the Ferrous Coin in the CTX since we do not have much mineralization here, and of course a mode with HIgh Trash etc.

Another question now since the CTX has been around a bit do they now have the upgrades already on the new machine or do you still need to go through Exchange 2 to do them?

I think you may be confused on the ferrous-coin. It is not for high mineralization. it seperates iron from targets that are deep very well in low mineralization. You should do quite well with it. High trash is for med/low mineralization. seperates in high trash it is very quick at seperating but not so deep. Your soil sounds perfect for combine id profile with ferrous-coin. It may false every once in a while but you can double check with another mode, adjust your sensitivity, or just dig it. If you have high mineralization you want to use ground-coin and maybe even use ground balancing. You will want ground balancing off using ferrous-coin.

This is right from the manual.

Ferrous-Coin

Ferrous-Coin improves the Target ID stability of coin type targets amongst
ferrous targets in areas with low mineralization. This setting uses advanced signal
processing techniques to minimize the blending of ferrous and coin type target
signals even when they are on top of each other. Both targets will be more
accurately identified and their cursors displayed simultaneously on the Detect
screen.
If both targets happen to be in an accepted areas of the screen, such as when
using a fully open/All Metals discrimination pattern, the Target ID number displayed
will be from the coin type object.

High Trash

The High Trash setting can identify weak accepted target signals amongst rejected
targets even if the rejected target signals are stronger. The advanced signal
processing takes the best accepted target signal and ignores all the rejected target
signals no matter how strong they are. When High Trash is used, the Target ID is
less stable, therefore a larger edit frame will be required in order to accept or reject
specific targets. High Trash can also be used with a slightly faster sweep speed,
making it suitable for areas where fast ground coverage is important, such as during
competition hunts. The High Trash setting also offers improved target ID stability in
highly mineralized ground conditions.

This also right out of the manual.

Range: Low Trash/High Trash/Ferrous-Coin/Ground-Coin
Target Separation allows you to optimize the signal processing to suit your
detecting conditions. The Target Separation settings are:

I understood that about Ferrous Coin, that is why I said we do not have much high mineralization. I have read parts of the manual and wanted confirmation that I understood what it said. It is one thing to read something without the machine in hand to check out if one truly understands.

I just changed from an etrac to CTX. The etrac experience helped me to make the transition, however, it is not an etrac. You were pretty much right on, and that is pretty much what I run and have had good luck with. Learning how to identify iron has been the hardest for me to adjust to. I run target trace, but sometimes the glare makes it hard to see the screen. I started with ferrous coin, combined, fast off, deep on, factory coins program and just now trying the 50 conductive to see what I like best, I personally wanted to give the machine 3 weeks before I started to try different things. In my first three weeks I found 19 silvers. I had found 25 before that with my etrac. Also, I never found coins in the same hole as a nail with my etrac, but have found quite a few already with the ctx. It swings effortlessly. go to ctx3030.com and watch the discrimination video. Good luck

If you are having success with TTF on your ETRAC, implementing Combined audio on your CTX would be like running your ETRAC on steroids. Ferrous / Coin Separation with Target Trace (and proper discrimination) will allow you to see coins amongst the iron targets (nails) like no other detector on the market. The main thing to remember is that it is not an ETRAC. Although some of the functionality is similar, the CTX 3030 has functionality that will allow you to tweak it to match nearly any detecting situation. If you take the time to learn and understand the additional functionality available on the CTX 3030, making the transition from the ETRAC should be quite easy (and rewarding). JMHO HH Randy
