What do you think of plastic sand scoops?

Road Gang

New member
Does anyone use these plastic sand scoops? They have my interest since you can scan them for metal. Plastic isn't as heavy as metal either which is another plus. Do they work well? Do they last? They are all over ebay for about $18 to $20 after shipping. I'm also looking at the stainless steel ones which cost about twice as much but I wonder if they are overkill for me. I am probably not going to be doing sandy beaches as much as other types of ground. I appreciate your comments. Thanks!

Well Road Gang, that unit may work in the dry loose sand, but you ain't gunna fare too well shovin' it in the wetsand. Just my personal thoughts. I use an 11LB stainless steel scoop and still break it, savvy?

... buy a long handled stainless steel scoop. It'll save your back and your legs.

I used them for a couple of years. Totally useless in wet or compacted sand! I made myself one out of 100mm PVC drain pipe, drilled all the holes, fitted the end cap, attached a handle and hey presto. They work OK in the wet and compacted stuff, fabulous on the dry sand. I spent $149 on a long steel handled scoop that has also got a smaller handle as well. I'd go the stainless scoop if you can afford it, or heavy welded Aluminum. Live your dreams! you may get lucky and get your monies worth from it. If you planning long serious hunting and want something to last longer, you might want to go for the extra expense.

Thanks for all the comments. I guess I'll go with the stainless steel version. I'm shying away from the long handle one because I'm disabled and I can't carry much. It looks to be rather awkward to hold while swinging . As much as I won't like it, getting up and down is good for me in moderation too.

Road Gang, get you a good scoop with long handle. Buy a cheap tool belt put a J hook on it and hang your scoop on it. Then you can hunt all day without a problem. Good luck with whatever you decide. HH

DO NOT BUY A PLASTIC HAND SCOOP.THEY WILL TEAR UP YOUR HAND.THERE ARE PLENTY OF SITES ON THE WEB WHERE YOU CAN FIND ALL DIFFERENT KINDS.

I bought one to use in Daytona & it just wasn't sturdy enough for the sand in Daytona. I still keep it as a back-up, but I never use it. I use a long handled Stainless steel scoop normally, but I couln't use it in Daytona. I did buy an aluminum scoop to use in Daytona & it worked well. Cost about $130-150. Depending on size, shape & where you buy. For normal beach hunting, I prefer the long handled Stainless Steel Scoop. Take it from me, though & don't buy anything else but Stainless or you will eventually buy it because the others will break.

See Ya
