...I have been hard core practicing with the Explorer. Very impressed so far. But as always after some use certain questions come up.
One issue I have had lately is kind of like a dissapearing signal without digging. Now..let's see if I can explain this.
At an old highly mineralized beach. Normal audio, iron mask -8,conductive audio, tones 8, vraiablity 10 and no fast or deep selected....oh and auto sensitivity.
Alright....so I am scanning the beach and even with noise cancel I still get some falsing...ah thats o.k..keep going. I do not have excessive nulling..but quite a few hot rocks. Find a target..scan it...seems to be a good hit...maybe 6-8 inches....o.k. Then all of a sudden nothing...threshold goes to steady and the spot no longer gives a return....actually the threshold is dead steady....hmmmm...I find that unusualy. this usually happens when I find a target and am doing the short wiggle over the target...all of a sudden...wham steady threshold.
Now...if I scan a coin I toss down or say...the eyelet on my sneaker it will now respond to those...then if I recheck the spot ...now it will start to respond on the spot again.
Hmmm...wierd...not sure....some thoughts.

Almost sounds like your auto sensitivity is adjusting itself too low?, when it happens again try switching to manual mode to see what happens, generally a good hit and a steady threshold to the sides means a good target, if it were nulling I would say iron, but since it isnt something might be down there

...if I remember correctly I did try that.
The diference in what you describe and maybe what is happening is this.
As you sweep across the beach you will hear it null a little here and maybe a weak signal there...even in a relatively local area. Then when I get a decent signal...and not shallow either, I will sweep it. Once in a while as I am narrowing the sweep over the target the threshold just goes real steady. Everywhere....even if I go back over areas that would give me a null a second ago. Kind of like....mmmm... maybe it locked up in auto....maybe that is it.
I will see if I can get it to do it again and then switch to manual.
Basically it is as if all the small signals and nulls just dissapeared and the machine is running dead steady threshold over a clean beach. I have to scan over a surface target (like my shoe eyelet) to get it to kind of reset before it will hit any sub surface targets.
Well anyway.....thanks for the advice....I was kind of suspicious that maybe it was the auto sens locking up. This was the same beach that the terrible hot rock issue I asked about on the Depot.
