What do you remember about the DEPTH MASTER audio enhancers??

I cannot find a thing on the internet about the Depth Master audio enhancers that were popular over 20 years ago. I did find a short discussion on how the Depth Master Plus aided the Tesoro uMax, here on Findmall, but that was it.

I am interested in knowing what you kntow about the series. I saw a Depth Master V for sale, but didn't know if it was as good as the Depth Master Plus, or, if it fit only a particular detector. The seller didn't know either, what detectors that it did fit.

Any information would be appreciated...

thanks,

dex

Hello Dex. I used the Depth Master when I first started metal detecting about 25 years ago. It was an audio amplifier that would enhance the deeper, fainter signals. When I started detecting there were no digital detectors and the Depth Master worked very well on my analog White's 6000 D series 1, 6000 D series 2, and 6000 Di pro. When I bought my Eagle II (a digital metal detector) the Depth Master never worked that well on it. This is because the Eagle II already had this capability built into with its software. Since then I have never use it. I think that is the reason why they are not made anymore because almost all the detectors made since then have this capability.

By the way did you get your Red Baron?

The only thing they were, was an audio amplifier. So unless you have a lousy pair of headphones, or unless your hearing is poor, they do nothing to help. That is, they are not actually "increasing depth" (despite how the name of the product made it appear). They are only making your audio louder. Ie.: boosting the volume of what's already there, not "adding more depth". You can simply get a better pair of headphones and accomplish the same thing.

But there were no shortage of people back then to were duped by the slyly worded ads, and thought that they were somehow going to get more depth. I suppose this could be true if you had a lousy pair of headphones, or bad hearing, but otherwise, nothing at all has changed with the actual detector and signals it's putting out.

I've had three different Depth Master models, a Blackbird, a Champion and still have a Gold Rush. None of them actually increase the depth a detector is capable of, but they amplify weak signals so they're easier to hear. They also attenuate loud signals to a comfortable level, and the Champion and Gold Rush lowered and softens the tone of the signal. I still use the Gold Rush on an old Compass 100 khz TR I often use for hunting tot lots and graveled parking areas in hot weather when using earbuds instead of headphones and it really helps to hear the weak signals on it. On the Compass TR signals that are just a whisper without the Gold Rush are easy to hear with it turned on, but I have some hearing loss so it might not make a lot difference to anyone with normal hearing.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

I do appreciate the replies and the information that you are giving me about the Depth Master series of audio enhancers. If they do amplify the faint signal, then they may have been of benefit back then, and still be of benefit if used with a non-digital detector today. I am with JB(MS), in that we all approach a time when our hearing is not as it was when we were 25. Blame it on incoming artillery and rocket rounds, or, being around helicopters without ear protection, but at some time in our lives we do tend to hear less than we did.

The guy who I talked to who had a Depth Master Plus on his Tesoro uMax seemed to think that it helped him get the faint singles, and thus, more depth because a faint signal is usually a deeper target. It may not increase depth, but in his case, it allows him to hear the deeper signals that his detector was getting, but he wasn't hearing.

JB... can you tell me which detectors these models that you used fit?
"Blackbird, a Champion and still have a Gold Rush."

JOHN,

No, I haven't picked up a Bounty Hunter Red Baron that I can afford. Thanks for asking, and for reminding me that I am poor.
Just kidding. Thanks, John.

Check out ( docsdetecting.com) they have a couple of different types of audio enhancers on deep targets. Old Beechnut has some videos demonstrating the use of these on the beach using an Excallibur II. Hope this helps. HH :minelab:

The only difference as far as I could tell, other than the labels, was the Blackbird had a 1/4 inch mono jack and the Champion and Gold Rush had 1/4 inch stereo jacks The Gold Rush came with a set of long gone headphones and was supposedly for use on detectors made for hunting gold nuggets, but it and the Champion could be used on any detector that had a stereo headphone jack. If I remember correctly (it's been almost 20 years since I had it) the Blackbird was made just for Whites detectors, but I replaced the mono jacks with stereo ones on the one I had so I could use it on a couple of Garrretts and a Fisher and couldn't tell any difference between it and the others. Photo is of the Gold Rush I have, it's scruffy but still works the same way as it did.

Hershey 1, and JB(MS) Thank you so much for contributing great information on the topic of Depth Masters. I have learned a lot about them, and I am sure that I am not the only one who has.

I just bought the Depth Master V, which the seller claims that he used on a Garretts. Believe that he said an Ace 250, but isn't the Ace a more modern detector, and possibly not in need of a Depth Master, as some have posted above that the DM's helped the analog detectors but perhaps not the newer machines?

Anyone have info on the Depth Masters, it is appreciated.
