Hi everybody! I live on the north-eastern coast of the adriatic sea, in Italy, and i haven't heard of black sand until my discovery of this fantastic forum.
What is black sand? It's a particular condition in US beaches?

Thank you for the info; fortunately we don't have that kind of stuff on our beaches!!!

When one know what it is and how it is formed, it is a sign of plenty especially if one is the first on the beach soon after it is deposited there.
I am talking about the black sand strip that sometimes develops along some beaches in certain conditions.
If you are the first on the beach with a heavy strip of black sand you are very likely to score a nice catch especially older coins and the like.
It's one of my favorite sights.

:ausflag:Hi mate to answer your question on black sand here in Australia it forms by all the minerals that are formed in our white sand are way heavier and it sinks down through the white sand and deposits under the lighter white sand ,and the goodies just sit on top of it waiting for a detectorist to dig down to it and find the item also if you weigh a bucket full of the dark sand it is heaps heavier than the top white saND.terry in oz:ausflag:

When panning for gold in northern California, we look for areas of streams that contain black sand. Being heavy they sink to the lowest areas of streams...that's where the gold goes too.

I use my MXT to find and follow black sand areas when running a sluice and pan in a new claim.
