What do you guys Love about the Elite?

hi donny,
thats a real good question and ill try to give you my thoughts and feelings about the sovereigns. lets take a few steps backwards first. i started out with a fisher 1280 and thats when i got my feet wet in the detecting hobby. its a great machine and now my grandson has it and it works great for him. by this time i found the detector forms and tried learning everything i could about the hobby because its something i always wanted to get into. now people started talking about this new detector that was coming out called the minelab explorer. my choice was the xs model over the s model. it seemed to me that all the hardcore detector men were talking about it and how they liked it so i ordered one figuring that it shouldnt be that much different from my 1280 fisher. well that was another lesson learned also. after working my brains out with the learning curve i started picking it up and got pretty good with it. now i can run that explorer in my sleep it so easy. everythings right there on the screen. all the while im reading about the sovereigns and listening to i call very hardcore or old school guys using the sovereigns. they go by sounds and gut feelings and that alwayed impressed me and thats the type of detectorist i wanted to see myself as. i dont have the elite but just purchased the sovereign Gt with a meter and two coils, the 10"er and the 8"er and a sunray probe. on my explorer i have all sunrays coils plus the probe.
so my feeling on my new sovereign is im looking forwards to all the new challenges that this sovereign GT is going to give me. im looking for a excellent beach killer machine and with a sunray S-12 i should have that. with my retirement coming this march i'll be looking at doing alot of detecting, getting more involed with the clubs in my area and spending alot of time walking the beaches in jeresy and delaware and visiting a few guys ive met in these forms who have invited me to come down to virginia and hunt some battle fields which i consider myself as a major civil war buff and hanging out with alot of detectorist like myself. as far as love goes i think it will be the challenges and all the work that goes behind metal detecting. i know my sovereign GT will give me all of that.

Stan,
Thanks for the very nice reply........sounds like your on your way to a great retirement with the infusion of our great hobby thrown in to make it fun & rewarding for sure......You made a wise choice on a great unit with the GT & Im sure your find some amazing stuff judging by your enthusiasm. That is all it takes and is a great recipe for success. I have had thru the years a Love Hate relationship with Minelab units myself ....buying, selling, testing, etc etc but somehow I always return as I have this time with the Elite which btw is my 4th variation of the Sov having owned the originals and a few XS models too....plus the EXP, & most recently the Xterra 30.....There

I can see what you are looking for now.

I have the 2a and the GT. The Elite falls in between.......

Elite has the fixed/variable tone switch from the 2a (not present on the GT).

Elite and GT have a band switch to reduce interference from other Sov/Excals.

Elite and GT have a locking mount for the box....won't slide out like the 2a.

Elite and GT have a snap in battery pack that don't fall out. AA pack is standard on the Elite, NiMh is standard on the GT. Both are interchangeable.

GT has a straight stick (good balance) instead of the "S" rod.

Elite does not have iron mask on/off like GT.

Elite does not have Track/Fixed/Pinpoint all metals control switch like the GT. Elite works like the 2a........you are either in disc mode or all metal.....

Did that cover it for you ??

First off thanx for the informative answers to my questions thats what I needed.....Second Can I buy a GT rod for the Elite? Price?

HH

You should be able to get the GP style stick from any of the Minelab dealers. Don't know how much it will cost you.

Even though the GT (or Elite) is heavy, it balances good and does not wipe out your arm the way the "S" rod does.

You adjust the hand grip position to get it how you like it.

Thanks Art I will surly look into this.........how about these aftermarket straight shafts I see out there also?

I fired off an email to Minelab Corp in Vegas....
& got a reply in less then an hour to question on my straight shaft purchasing request from Dick Shultz....
I was impressed to say the least!!!

There are quite a few out there. David @ dixie metal detectors has a couple different ones.

There have been quite a few that were flat out custom made. Some were simply re-cycled White's rods.

Whatever you go with, keep it adjustable in some way for a decent balance.

For under $50 bucks there seems to be many options....I guess its a personal preference in the end.....
We'll see?

I agree with you Donny, my personal experiences with MINELAB SERVICE
the last two yrs, has SIMPLY BEEN OUTSTANDING!!! Also, I just got a New MINELAB SOV-GT last week, and can't wait to GET A TREASURE HUNTING!! HH
