Usually I try to help them if they have "some" idea of where they lost it (versus "somewhere on this beach" for example).
I figure a few minutes that may bring some happiness in this world today is worth it. Besides it doesn't happen very often and I really enjoy using my detectors. Have been successful quite a few times which was pretty satisfying.
