What do you call it?

Looking for a more eloquent phrase to describe the hobby. I've heard the term "dirt fishing" which is interesting. Sometimes I'll tell the wife I'm going "pinging". What are some different creative terms you guys use? (Not the creative terms when you dig a cashe of beer cans at 3 ft...)

Koin-shooting, park picking, swinging the MD and going for a swing.

It really depends on the day, my intentions, attitude and how often I'm willing to meet another pull tab, pop top, screw cap or piece of foil. Heres some I've used.

Recovering History - when I relic hunt
Going to the lost and found Store - Tot lot hunting
Digging up the past - old site searching
Community service - park hunts
Rescuing the lost ones - silver coin hunting
Exercising - some days just not willing to dig but the best and surest of targets
Going out for a walk - same as above
Saving the orphans - Coin hunting
Cleansing the earth - digging every target
Sweeping the dirt/park/neighbors house etc. - New location to get an idea of what might be there
Sifting through history - sidewalk removals
Clad collecting - fast and furious
Working on the kids inheritance - don't know till I get out there
Karat/Carat hunting (you know the 10K, 14K, 18K and especially the 4 carat diamond type) - Looking for rings and jewelry

I just tell the wife i’m going digging. When someone asks me what am I doing, my standard response is “looking for gold”. They normally respond “ no, really, what are you doing.” I repeat “looking for gold.” I then get a long stare and they walk away. Some people just can’t handle the truth.:)

dirt fishing or historical recovery work for me. My 80 year old preacher calls his detector a Geiger counter...

And from me...what would you expect?

WaterWalker...

Some of the ones I have created is a glossary of digging terms. Here goes;

1. digaholic................................................one who is dedicated and lives to dig
2. mobile manure makers.........................dog
3. swish.......................................................water dig
4. Niagara nose...........................................running nose
5. quota.......................................................50 coins in a one day dig
6. century....................................................100 coins in one day
7. bihi...........................................................200 coins in one day
8. drunken sailor grid...................................meandering over a digging area with no set pattern

Those are just a few sir.
