What do meter readings mean?

While hunting Saturday, I got readings as high as 186 (on a penny) on my Sovereign GT meter. I don't remember doing that in the past, and I set it to a quarter @ 180. So what's up with this?

If it was set for 180 on a quarter that will be the highest reading you should be able to get on any target. Now if you get a higher reading you either bumped the calibration control on the meter, or the calibration was not correct when you did it. I have also seen where the calibration has drifted when the meter gets hot from the sunlight as the black color of the meter will cause some heat inside the meter. I just detect and if I ever see a number higher than 180 I know my calibration is off and if only a number or 2 i dont worry about it and compensate for it. Anytime you wonder if it is off or not just throw down a quarter and go over it trying to get the highest signal and if over 179-180 I just adjust my calibration, do the same if it is reading too low.

I set my meters on a 1
