Hello, I was just wanting to know which detector to get. This will be my first one and I can't tell a good one from a bad one. Just a little bit about me, I am 37 and married and I would like to find something for me and my wife to get into that we can do for a long time. So if you know what the differance is between a good one and a bad one help me out please.

Well, I take it that being on this forum that your looking at the First Texas (Bounty Hunter lineup)...For beginners, I would suggest the tracker IV for a beginner detector, or maybe a Pioneer 505 (Sharp Shooter II)...You can grow into these as you go...Coming out soon are the Titanium series detectors...They are looking good...They cost a bit more, but look well constructed, and have great functions and features (no more muffler on a stick...Maybe they are starting to listen to their customers)...There is the Delta, Gamma, and Omega...They look a LOT like the X-Terra lineup by Minelab...The Titanium series is running $400, $500, and $600 respectively...
I hope this helps out some...It depends on your wallet, interest, and individual feel for the units...Detector choice is a highly personal issue...Evey one likes different features and such...

Hi and welcome!
I started out using a Tracker IV and still use it often. Very easy to learn and not a lot of bells and whistles to confuse a person with. Just a simple signal strength meter and two basic tones of identification. Also has a switch for three different types of discrimination. This detector will find you a lot of good stuff and not put much of a dent in the ol' wallet. Hope you and the wife have some fun and don't forget to show us what you find!

Hello WESTWOOD I myself am new to the forum also and wont pretend to be an expert on anything really. I come on to learn from these guys who seem extremly sharp and have learned alot from them just by reading their postings. I started swinging again and been useing a Fortune Hunter(Lone Star) that was a gift from my daughter. Have had good luck with it and is really not bad to learn. Ive since upgraded to a Land Star but havent had any swing time with it. I saw a Lone Star just recently at a pawn shop for $25.00 and it seemed to work just fine. So the deals are out there if you look around.

hi westwood, and welcome. as a longtime hunter, i would advise you to start cheap. a tracker 4 and perhaps a lonestar would suit your needs for now. ebay is full of each, probably could get both units almost new for around 200 bucks. very simple machines to operate, very short learning curve. and they're not junk either, both are good machines. don't forget headphones and a quality digging tool. patience, persistence and research are the three hallmarks of this hobby; i hope you have a well full of them, your're gonna need it. good luck, and hh,

Research is the biggest key to success in this great passion...Get books on your local history, visit your local historic society, and look for old maps of your area showing things that may no longer be there...I do a LOT of research...my main problem is I do not drive at the moment, so getting to a lot of the sites I have discovered is not always easy...

Hi Westwood MDing is a great idea my wife an I got in it together and she just love it she has a 505 in her car most of the time. We go together all the time easy machine to learn I found it in a pawn shop for $50.00 great machine we have found so much stuff. hope this helps I us an Ace 250 good luck and good hunting.

Hello Westwood, welcome to the hobby(addiction) and to the forum..

I have a BH Quicksilver that my girlfriend uses exclusively, this was my first detector and I soon found that i am more comfortable swinging a vintage style detector. I can't swing as long with the s handle, but thats just me. She however, can swing that thing all day and she makes a lot of good finds.

If you have an outdoor outfitter close by (i.e. Cabelas, Dick's, Scheels, etc) or a Walmart with a decent outdoors dept. go over and swing a few to see which is most comfortable and that the balance feels right.

The best detector isn't one we use, it's the one you find that fits you best.

Remember to post your finds.
