What did I do??

I recently made some posts concerning my experience with a Tejon I had bought from the classified section of our club's news letter. I have been hunting for quite a number of years but just recently started looking at the metal detecting forums. A friend told me of the Tesoro forum on a place called the Treasure Depot. There were a few people posting about this detector and my experience did not match what they were saying. I found it a nice detector, but had a few problems with it that I mentioned on the Tesoro forum.
There seemed to be some nice helpful people on the forum, but my posts were also met with some hostility. I recieved some emails almost immediately which made me block the incoming mail. Now, I have tried to answer a couple questions and I get told that my submission is not accepted or something like that.
I have used Tesoro and other machines for many years and am sorry that Tesoro felt that way about my posting that they removed my ability to post anything else on that particular forum of theres. I guess I will give this computer back to the wife full time and strictly do my hunting. Just ain't worth the grief. I checked back on some older postings and found posts basically saying that since the Tejon...all other Tesoro machines are kind of obsolete which is pure rubbish. When I saw those comments, I knew that these forums were not for me. Still felt bad about the Giffords not allowing me to post. Good luck to everyone.

I saw that you had posted a few questions, but didnt really look at them. Not sure what your "issues" were with the Tejon. That forum is not run by the Giffords. To get to the "Official" Tesoro forum go to

I don't even know if you were banned.
The fact is that some very blatant lies were posted over there about the Tejon capabilities by folks who should know better.
Use and enjoy what you have!
John

Further to that Jimmy, that forum at one time was known as the "official" tesoro forum but, and this is just my understanding not gospel, was asked to remove that designation when Tesoro opened their own forum. Personally in my own personal opinion it ought to go further and change its name to the Tejon forum.
Don't take their treatment of you to heart, just questioning the Tejon's abilities is enough to earn some pretty nasty replies in there. I know..

They all pretty much back up what I figured out for myself when I visited THAT forum. I never posted on there, just 'observed' they seem to be rather loyal to that detector! so don't take it to heart if you got some nasty remarks and e-mails. I had a similar experience on one of the 'other forums' when I was using another brand of detector... crappy comments and nasty e-mails just 'cos I dared to tell the truth about MY EXPERIENCES with that machine! stick around this forum, they're a good bunch of guys / gals! Don't let a few dillweeds spoil it for you, most of us are nice people

I am about to buy a Tejon for my son, he wants one and I am getting ready to buy another brand for myself. I cannot say no to my son because he saved his money so it's his money and besides I would not mind having a third detector around the house. Can you tell me what you found out about the Tejon or point me in the right direction? I would like to hear what your experinces were before we buy. By the way, the soil here is medium to highly mineralized
Thanks

Hi Jimmy.....ref the treasure depot, the nerd who runs
it once made claims that he helped design the detector
mentioned, so if you made any neg. remarks he will
more than likely cancel your post or block you out.
Just my 2 cents.....Paul

OK, so I used that phrase from one of the sources of your less than ideal experience on "another" forum Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. You have to understand that some of those folks are virtually brand loyal no matter what and given that many folks have dissed Tesoro for years about having less than top shelf depth capability, the animal house enthusiasts are just a bit, shall we say perhaps overzealous, about the Tejon since it has raised the bar for raw depth in the Tesoro line. I can understand that. The Tejon I owned also didn't deliver anywhere near to the hype from the internet buzz nor did I like it as well as a couple other Tesoro models. I've checked several other examples of the Tejon since then and those also didn't match the hype IMO, although some were stronger than the one I owned. Not matching the hype doesn't mean anything negative in my mind besides the obvious and I don't hold Tesoro liable for that. I'm not brand loyal. I try them all and use what I see works best for particular situations that I encounter in the field. Even though I don't rely on a Tesoro for times when I need maximum depth in the areas I hunt, I still use an Eldorado uMax occasionally for situations when I want a lightweight detector that works well in iron, offers manual ground balance adjustment, interference rejection, and extreme depth isn't required. It's unfortunate that so much "differences in personalities" has been involved around the Tejon but it's happened and everyone has made choices to let that influence them or not. Frankly, I'm looking forward to trying the next generation or spinoffs of the Tejon design and I'm confident the Giffords will be sure to make it an improvement. It's been said many times and I'll say it again, run what works for you, relax, and have fun!!!!

Glad to hear things you had to say and that it was not the Giffords who blocked me from posting. Best of hunting to all of you.

I only found and posted that my original bandido was a much more quiet detector to use and the ten turn ground balance on the bandido was much easier to GB with. The tejon seems like a nice machine, it's lightweight and feels comfortable, but so does my bandido. I use a 10 1/2 inch concentric coil with my bandido and get good results. Your son probably would not be happy unless he buys the detector he wants. But, if he wants it based solely on what might have been read over on that other forum, he might be disappointed if he's used to older Tesoro detectors. Just so he has fun with what he uses! Good luck.

Jimmy
Thanks for your input. The reason why my son (at my suggestion) is thinking about a Tejon is mainly because we have read that it can get decent depth in mineralized soil. I don't know first hand if this is correct but the other reason for considering this unit is because where we plan on doing our relic and coin hunting requires us to back back into the area.To be more specific, we take the ski lift up to the drop off point and we hike the rest. So it is important we have a detector that is decent and the package is compact. I told him to get a White MXT since I have a GMT and it is a great machine for the intended purpose which is Nugget shooting. However the LCD screen takes up a lot of room in our pack and is cumbersome. So the question is The Tejon is hard to GB? or is it that IF you don't GB the unit correctly you don't gain the depth. How about sensitivity in mineralized ground? I know the MXT will handle it quite well but package is the issue. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I'd be wanting a machine designed for nuggets. Why not call a multi line dealer and hopefully one in your area where you can check out the various machines first hand....to include a tejon. But, I have not heard anything about them being nugget hunters. Ease of packing a detector into a hunt site is one thing, but I'd also want that detector to be able to do the job at hand. Sounds like fun, have a great hunt Hector.

Hector,
Using the Tejon here in Oregon, I found the GB to be fairly touchy. An 1/8th of a turn can take you from strongly positive to strongly negative. When I took that detector to Illinois, the GB was wonderful and easy to do. A good half turn to fine tune the GB. I found the Tejon to be a little chattery at times, but have heard the MXT is the same. I've heard that many people like the Eldorado for hunting in mineralized ground, and some do well with them nugget shooting. Plus they are cheaper, with more coils available. You might want to check one of those out too!
J.

As mentioned in some of the replies, Tesoro nor the Gifford family/employees control what goes on within the online metal detecting forums, with the exception of their own Tesoro forum (Rentasquid post the link). I've been using Tesoro detectors for a long time, and became a dealer in the late 1980s. I've always had good experiences with the factory and the Gifford family. Unfortunately, not everyone loves the same brand or model of metal detector(s), but I can say Tesoro manufactures some very good equipment. The bottom line is, use the Tejon, read your manual in the evening when you can reflect on the days hunt. If you don't understand something, ask here or give James at Tesoro a call. Unless he's busy at the moment, he's a good guy to talk to, and will take the time to answer your questions. Please have your questions ready and to the point, and understand he is a busy guy. Also, if you have a local Tesoro dealer, ask them for help. Although you didn't purchase your Tejon from him, most dealers are more than happy to earn your future business. Be patient, learn the Tejon and you'll better able to judge whether it's for your requirements. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

It seems unfotunate to me that brand loyalty can mar the use of a forum. I haven't had the chance to compare numerous models among the different brands, but do recognize that many of the postings reflect just one users experience or opinion. Also, have puzzled for a long time over my own opinion that ANY MACHINE THAT WORKS may have found a number of the supposedly super deep finds that are claimed. I feel that the main advantage in recovering an older coin for instance is swinging the coil over an older coin, regardless of the detector brand. I am sure that some detectors are indeed more suited to certain types of hunting and ground conditions so knowing the capabilities our there among the different brands may be useful.

I have an Eldorado with a full selection of coils and have found it to be as much detector as I need. Seldom have had any ground problems and ground balancing is not that difficult after you practice it for a bit. Happy hunting,

I use detectors from 5 different Mfg's........some old, some new........HH Paul
