What detector to buy

wcorney

New member
I am thinking about buying a detector and would appreciate any suggestions. I detected many (30) years ago (Gardiner and a White's), but haven't done so in the past 20 years.

I would be mostly coin hunting. Would want one that goes deep since most of the places I would go I'm sure have been hunted heavily. Good discrimination from junk is important but I don't care if it tells me that's it's a dime or a quarter. I'm willing to buy the best if needed for those two criteria, but if I can achieve that without all the other bells and whistles at a lower price, all the better.

I can remember finding quarters and dimes around 7" to 8" with very careful sweeping years ago (usually in a non-discriminate mode). Are the new detectors much better on depth? I realize this is a White's forum, but please provide any unbiased opinions on other detectors.

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi Wayne! I also returned to MDing after years of not. Been at it for about5 now and have had Bounty Hunters, Garretts, White's, Minelabs, and Tesoro's. I have found great things with most of them. I just traded a Xterra for a Explorer ll and I'm quite impressed with it so far. It just gets so heavy after awhile. One detector I wish I kept was the White's M6. i miss it a lot. I hope this helps.

Hi Wayne, I personally love my Whites MXT, and my hubby would probably say the same about his White's DFX. It's a matter of bells and whistles. I honestly think the MXT will go as deep as the DFX and can be more accurate on the targets. I've heard the M6 is a good machine also. Heck, I started with a Radio Shack and found coins, etc. to pay for it many times over. Back then I loved the machine. Now, I wouldn't part with my MXT. There's a lot of wonderful people here and all over the Findmall forums and we'll all be happy to help out in any way. HH and I wish you the best, Nancy

And why would you think I would do something like that to you Fred? Just kidding.......you didn't say anything wrong at all. HH and take care, Nancy

I've done some exploring on various sites and I'm leaning towards the Minelab Explorer SE Pro over the White's DFX 300. Who has used both? I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne, I sent your post to the DFX Classroom Forum. Maybe they can help you out. HH to all, Nancy

The MXT. I'm taking mine out today, a new brand spanking newie. I had one but they are selling that well over here in OZ and gaining a rock solid reputation, taken a few years I know we are a bit slow over here to catch on at times, that I let the boss sell the one I had to keep a customer happy who "just had to have one now" as at the time we had sold out and the shipment was being held up in one of our Aussie ports. This ones not going anywhere to anyone else though this time. Here's hoping I score some yellow today.

B.T, I hope you have a great day of hunting and you find that pot of gold! Keep us posted and enjoy that new MXT. Nancy

The Explorer will find u some good stuff but so will the DFX.The problem with reading forums is that everybody rates their chosen machine as the best....sometimes people say one machine is better than another and they have'nt even used both machines. As a rule of thumb most top machines today are pretty much the same performance wise....they will all make finds at around the same depth and will all give u a decent days hunt.I've had experience with most of todays top machines including minelabs but i have now settled on the Whites matrix m6.I'm not going to say it's the best machine out there but i will say that it will perform as well as anything else in most conditions and it's very simple to operate.....no useless programs to get in the way of my detecting.Whatever machine u decide on u have to put in the time to learn it to get the most out of it....a lot of negative reviews on forums are the result of an operator not understanding their machine.

Took my new machine out to a spot where some old reef workings are. I ran the 5.3 Eclipse and the gain at +2, the ground here is really nice to work in without too much mineral variation, Vsat was set to just 5. First bit was in quartz and was just a nice little sweet sound that would not go away, even with the Tracking on. It turned out to be just 1/20th of a gram. Next bit was another chunk of quartz about the size of my fist. I broke it down and kept breaking it down to the final bit which was just a tiny bit of quartz the size of a match head with a small .2 gram bit of gold attached. The MXT is as hot as on specie gold using the 5.3. I had smashed this place to death with my Terra 70, now long gone to a new home, but the MXT keeps finding stuff there. A true pleasure to use, love it.
I have some more species from a previous trip to the same spot with tiny bits of gold in them so ill smash them out and post the pics in a few days time to show what the MXT and 5.3 combo is capable of.

B.T, What an exciting outing. I can't wait to see pictures. It was well worth the wait to use your MXT a.k.a. gold magnet! That's way too cool. I would love to be able to hunt for gold as long as there's NO snakes around. I couldn't handle that! Not even for gold. Hope you didn't come across any? Thanks for sharing and don't forget the pictures. I'm sure there's many of us that would enjoy them. HH to all, Nancy

B.T., I am glade to hear that the MXT will pick up a signal off a small nugget the size of a match head inside a chunk of quarts. I know were some quarts out crops are in Arizona that are famous for their gold content. I have used my GMT and done well, guess I will try the MXT next time I am down there. I have had great success with the MXT on surface pickers and small nuggets about 3 to 4 inches down. Love to see some pictures of your finds, I have been bitten and it sure itches
