What Detector Should I Buy?

findsseeker

New member
I'm really new to this hobby and know almost nothing about detectors. What model Tesoro or any other brand would you suggest? I only want to hunt coins and relics on land and I will be hunting mostly West Virginia. My budget is about $400. Thank you.

It has a some nice articles and one of them is about how to figure out what kind of detector to buy.

Sometimes asking us is like asking what our favorite candy is.

For Tesoro, I personally thrive on the Golden MicroMax. But I'm not in Virgina and I don't do much relic hunting and my ground is going to be different.

I also like the Cortes. But I use it for different targets than I use the Golden for.

Good luck.

it has no target id but i think as a beginer you should get use to listening to what it is telling you rather than seeing trust me it will help down the road. if you want id look for used in your price range whites, garret, tesoro, fisher all have great units for beginers.

Go with the Vaquero for about $420 and you'll never look back. Period.

OK, can I get in on this, too? I'm wrestling between the Vaquero and DeLeon. Each has its' own great features.

Why the Vaquero over the DeLeon, other than manual ground balance?

Manual Ground Balance, Manual Ground Balance, Manual Ground Balance!!! Those are the top three reasons to go with the Vaquero. The single most important feature you can find for a relic machine.

The Vaquero is also the fastest recovery detector form trash(null) to keeper(positive tone) that I know of. It will allow you, especially if you are new to the hobby, to recover more in trashy areas. I have personally dug beautiful Eagle Buttons within an inch or less from a nail.

Findseeker......the Vaquero is also as close to your stated budget as it gets! Like Digger said, "you won't look back", you'll be too busy looking where you're digging! :tesoro::thumbup:

Findsseeker; Listen to what old timers are telling you. I understand there is a strong temptation to go for the TID Machine. A big "BUT", even with the TID machine , to get the best from it you still have to learn to process the sounds. Learn what your machine is telling you. I and many others have found that it is easier for the brain to ID and process sounds than it is to process visual clues. Especially with the machine swinging two and fro. It is much more relaxing to hunt when you are processing sounds than it is to try and keep up with the motion of the machine and understand the bouncing ball. I first learned on a TID machine. When I went to the tone only machine I realized I was spending much to much time looking at the display on the TID. Then I had to go back and re-learn the TID. Get a good pair of Headphones, and be patient. You will be glad you did. poorman

The Vaquero and the Cibola both were designed with "HOT" (High Output Technology). They see deeper, and respond much quicker than those without HOT. In addition, the Vaquero has M-A-N-U-A-L GROUND BALANCE!!! In addition, the Vaquero will usually run smoother in mineralized soil. In addition the Vaquero is closer to findsseeker's stated budget. Guess you guys can't tell that I am sold on the Vaquero, can you??? :detecting::tesoro::super:
