What detector should I buy for gold nuggets ??

GAdigger

New member
I am purchasing a claim on the North Forks of the Salmon River in northern CA (Siskiyou County). When not dredging I will be detecting for gold nuggets. This will be only my second detector (First is a White's XLT). It will be used exclusively for gold nugget hunting on this claim. I am considering the MineLab 4500 or the new White's PI. I am aware of the cost difference but if the more expensive unit will find more gold then I have no problem paying the extra money. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am truly a "newbie' at detecting even though I do have the XLT. With a new detector would there be any reason to take the XLT with me or just leave it at home for relic hunting? This is only my second post so I am counting on all of the seasoned pros to help me out. Thanks.

I have the XLT-E ,but I don't live in a gold bearing area. I've seen that the :garrett:Scorpion detector get very good reviews for detecting gold . You may want to check that forum..

Take your XLT and first determine how much iron and trash you have on the claim.
Minelab PIs such as GPX 4500 are dig it all machines and will drive you nuts if you have no discrimination in
an iron infested site.

George,

Very good advice. I will take the XLT first and see what I find. I will then proceed from there. I will be very realistic but hopefully it will be all nuggets and very little trash.:)
Thanks,
Biram

GPX 4500 is NOT a dig it all machine.................. it has discrimination / ferrous iron reject and ground balance... you can get rid of electrical interference and it has soil timings....... i OWN one and it rocks..... it has QUICK start and detect features and a whole lot more..... if you want another one that is a PI and a little less expensive go to

surfscanner.com

click on ERIC FOSTER at the bottom of the page and look at GOLDSCAN 5C it is about 2700.00... they are the ones that sold the rights to WHITES so that they could use the surfscanner discrimination and ground balance circuit in the WHITES TDI........

Both the GPX 4500 and the GOLDSCAN 5C blow the TDI out of the water
