Having the gain control at your fingertips lets you dial the power on the fly...you can "shrink" the footprint of the coil quite a bit by cranking down the gain. The fact it's small combined with being DD let's it really sneak in between trash items and see the goodies. It also gets very surprising depth when you turn up the gain and thresh... Mine can even be taken to max gain and remain stable. It's a very good accessory coil...I use it all the time for hunting trashy old home sites.
