What coil to use for the MXT on deep search targets?

I'm planning on using my lightweight machine for open field and woods scouting, in search of Civil War camps. But, once located I'm planning on using my MXT for deep search, since the lightweight machine doesn't have any large coils. Which would be better for this, the 12" Super coil or the 10" X 12" Excelerator coil? I'm also considering the 14" Circular DD coil, but don't know if the weight wouldn't be a little prohibitive and don't know if the depth difference between the 12" and the 14" would be worth it. Can someone with experience on the larger coils give me some ideas?

The Bigger The Coil The Deeper It Goes---I Have Had All The Whites And There Big Coil Went The Deepest---There Is The EXcelerator 18 in---I Had It Also But Being 72 Me Bad Arm Did Not Like It--If You Can Handle The Weight It Is Good Also---The Choise Is Yours But You Have To Remember The 18in Has To Be Used In More Open Ground !

You might want to look at the NEW 10x12 SEF Excelerator (butterfly) coil. I have been evaluating it for a month or so and it is a joy to swing. It has a good balance and I don't have a problem swinging it for hours. I have not had a chance to have it weighed but I think its somewhere near the stock 950 coil. Its has proven itself when coin shooting but I have not had a chance to go relic hunting yet but you can bet when I do this coil will be on my MXT. HH Dennis in Idaho

Yeah, the trash issue is the reason I'm considering the DD coils. I need a coil that will not go bonkers in a lot of iron, but will give decent depth and the DD coils with their wiper blade type signal seem best suited for this. I'm down to the 10 X 14 Excelerator or the new SEF. Just wish someone with moderate ground experience using the 10 X 14 would jump in here and let us know how well it works.

Thanks,

Canewrap,
You said,"Yeah, the trash issue is the reason I'm considering the DD coils.". The DD's are good at separation but still a big coil doesn't work well in what I call trash. There are just too many targets under a big coil at one time.

I cut this from a post Monte just made on the main forum,
Yes, they are a good DD design and Yes, their narrow-scan might be of benefit when picking between targets ... IF you are sweeping with them positioned in line with your sweep. Remember, the Double_d (wide scan) effective field pattern is narrow from front-to-rear, but it is called a "wide scan" coil because is scans a wider path than a comparable size concentric coil. Therefore, targets that are close to the front or rear of a desired target, on a side-to-side sweep, can cause more masking in some cases than a smaller coil of a concentric design of similar size.

Bigger coils will get some depth increase but only if they aren't effected by target masking. In trash when the masking starts a smaller coils usually gets more effective depth. On one of the field tests on the 12x10 SEF they said it was more for open sites like sports fields etc. Rob

might want to think about how tall the grass is where you'll be detecting, can you fight your way thru with the big coil or is the grass mowed down?

I'm taking into consideration that I will probably have to dig out a lot of the trash on an established CW site to eliminate masking as much as possible. This will be in order to look for deeper targets that were masked to begin with. But, once I do I will need a good coil that can see deeper, so I can sample the site and see if there are indeed any deeper targets to be had. For instance I know of a winter camp that has been hunted for years that we're going to hunt this fall and I'll bet beans to bullets that this site has deep targets that have been missed over the years.

A lot of this is going to be woods detecting. So, is there a compromise coil that will see a little deeper than the stock, but will not be as problematic in light trash?

hello al , i would like to know ? i talked to white ,and they said that the 1400 ec.... deep scan coil will go deeper than the 300 ,they are puting on the mxt . just want to hear what you all have got to say ,about wet sand beach hunting about the 1400 thankc
